Rodney:

Do you have the story behind this issue?

I also note some varieties on the stamps.

Upper Left - Large lake in WA
Lower left - Two new towns in NT, WA/SA
Lower right - Scar on mid right arm
Upper right - New island by lower point of 5
- New island / reef at upper right corner

G'day Blair,
The piece is exhaustive and runs out at about 15 pages,
written by a Mr. N.J. Sheppard, and featured as part of the program
for "Sydpex 1980"
The whole printing was destroyed apart from an imperforate sheet
now housed in the official Australia Post collection, a copy of
which was subject of my post.
I'll precis the article and post back in a few days.

I checked the web to see if Mr. Sheppard had published anything
and found this snippet on the history of Diego Garcia
http://www.zianet.com/tedmorris/dg/realhistory.html

June 1939 A Consolitated PBY-2 Flying Boat, call sign GUBA-2 carried out an
air mail route survey flight from Australia across the Indian Ocean
calling at Cocos Islands, Diego Garcia, and Seychelles arriving at
Mombasa on 21 June 1939. It then returned to California, whence it
had departed a year or so earlier. World War II intervened before
this service could be inagurated

Blair, rather than spoil a really good yarn,
perhaps I can email you the text.
I save all my emails and articles with MSWorks,
but I can drop it into MSWord.
Do you have either of the 2?
Otherwise Wordpad?

Rodney:

Would appreciate it.
I have both MS Works Suite 2003 and MS Word 2002.

Maybe I can come up with a story about or picture
of flying boat GUBA-2 on the net.

Cheers

My Version is the old MSWorks 4.5a (The best imho)
I trust they shall be interchangeable.

(I have images of all the covers of the flight)

I'll send off the text into the void shortly.
