The Postal Service response is: 12 times 37 cents comes to $4.44 face

value,
but four is considered an unlucky number in the Chinese culture. By

contrast,
eight is considered very lucky, so by doubling the number of stamps they

turn
bad luck into good!

Where did you hear that? I've live in Hong Kong and married a Chinese
girl. Five is unlucky number. So unlucky that when 5 is written in
Chinese, there is the symbol for "man" (not pronounced) to guard it so to
speak. Look at any stamp that has a value of just 5 and you will see it.
The "man" symbol is on the left of the character (the vertical line with the
small diagonal line at the top).
I think doubling the $4.44 to $8.88 is lucky for USPS as they rub
their hands thinking collectors will have to pay twice as much to get one
sheet.

September 18. Greta Garbo, USA & Sweden. This one is for you, Ralph!

Oh when I see so many stamps to be issued and the subjects I just
"Vant to be alone!"

I'll buy Gret though... she was & still a classic.

I suppose that this means that these stamps are self-adhesives. It's just
another trick to sell more at once.

All 2005 U.S. stamp issues are anticipated to be self-adhesives. Bummer.
