Default Contest Thread - Sibirskmoneta

I used to post here a lot more frequently, frankly I haven't had a lot of
time recently to participate here in RCC. In the last couple of years my
collecting interests evolved from collecting primarily Scottish coins and
banknotes, to now collecting mostly ancients, Syracuse, Black Sea and Asia
Minor. I have also in the past few months become more interested in 19th
century USA gold and Morgan Dollars.

I cannot explain Morgan Dollars and the interest there, but I would go to
shows and avoid them like the plaque because everybody ooowed and ahhed over
them and I thought they were not that pretty of a coin to deserve the
attention. I guess that maybe my father in law may have caused this
interest, he is a Morgan Dollar collector, and going to shows with him, I
started paying more attention to the high grade examples. Now I am starting
off myself, looking for blast white cartwheels with little or no bagmarks,
and preferably a mintmark.

19th century gold has become a fascination to me also, several months back I
picked up an 1849 $10, my now oldest US gold. But the $20's in MS-65+ are
my main pursuit in this arena.

In addition to the ancients, the USA etc, I have branched out into
collecting early 20th century Portuguese coins, assisted in some great
trades with a fellow collector in Lisbon. My personal favourite coin is the
4 Centavos from 1919, a very simple, yet symbolic coin with a young girl
representative of the then new Portuguese Republic. I am still looking for
a BU example of the 1915 Escudo, the last anchor of my type set. Then I
need to start moving forward with my minors.

I also collect Russian and USSR coins, reflected in my webpages. In
addition I have an addiction to large Swedish bronzes, plate money mainly.

And now my userid, Sibirksmoneta, I have collected Siberian coins for a long
time, but only in the last 6 mths have I completed this type set by
denomination with an EF-AU Polushka or 1/4 Kopek from 1777. With this being
the key coin in my collection, being the rarest, the highest graded, and
most pricey, now I desire to upgrade the rest of the coins with the
exception of the 1 Kopek Novodel.

I have a couple of Soviet Union--what they called??--OK I had to
copy/n/paste--cervrintsev's.
They're eeevil looking huge horse blankets. Really scary--they have this
picture of the eastern hemipshere with a huge hammer and sickle across
there. Looks like their plans were thwarted thankfully ;-)

It's good to see someone with a collecting interest that is a little
unusual. I don't think I know anyone else who collects 20th Century
Portuguese coins. I have a few but most are modern commems (after 1950)
with the one exception being a 50 Centavo from 1916.

IMO, we don't see enough posts here World coins. Besides you, Dale
(with his Austrian coins/medals), Harold (with his Jersey coins), and Ian
(with his French jetons)very few people post anything but U.S. and
occassionally ancients.

Personally, I have an interest in modern gold commems with very low
mintages. I have many with mintages of 500 pieces or less. I have a 1977
Belize 100 Dollar coin commemorating Kinich Ahau, Mayan Sun God, in a matte
finish, that has a mintage of only 200 pieces.

I watched the gold go in the Heritage auction last week. Could not believe
how high Japanese gold goes for.

Yeah that stuff was really cheap about 10 years ago and it's just one of
those "darn-it I should have gotten some back then" deals.

Yeah like I would be buying some of that --you are too funny!
You know I have this one coin that it looks like the date says 1981 but
there's no way it's even close to a 1981. I have this detailed.pdf file that
lists all the dates and what characters are what and this one coin that's
stumped me for a really long time doesn't match to anything on the list.
Now you got me wanting to dig that stuff out and try to find out what I have
once again.
