Default Queen Victoria Revenue Used in Victoria in 1961

I place the date of this manuscript cancel as 5/17/61 or for those
inclined 17/5/61. Now, after how many kings, queens and different
royal players, this stamp comes out of the closet to be used.

http://www.adirondack-pc.com/VictoriaQVRev.jpg

Now, these stamps are definitely a quandary. It is revenue usage, I
don't think there's any doubt. These Stamp Duty issues could be used
as postage as well.

I wonder if this beast is an original or state reprinted copy?

I have - and have seen many others of this set used in the '50s /
'60s. According to the Barefoot revenue catalog of 1996, this is the
1909 2/6 Orange.

Even so, this would be very late to use a QV image. In 1961 it is now
4 royalty personages away!

Victoria is a specialist's nightmare - or like Machin folk - a field
of plenty.

A slight correction,
thanks to your query, I found the preamble to my ongoing
question of Australian State stamps being in fact "commonwealth stamps"

As in regards to yours, Revenue was still a State based issue (Victoria),
and not Commonwealth.
However, it was still valid to 1966.

This is in the Barefoot Revenue catalog. I can probably scan - maybe
- the section. It's a paperback and might break the binding.

What's worse is that I just looked at some others of the same series.
One has a hand stamped 1961 on it, so there's no mistaking it.

The others look like the 1870's issues but were reprinted in 1909.

Neat!

Quite possibly that some places had extra stock that they wanted to
use up. That's the only thing I can think of, unless some place
bought some spare sheets from a dealer and used them. In the '60s,
they probably weren't worth as much as they are today - which isn't
truly a lot anyway.

Since the 1909 series, there have been several other larger sets
printed for Stamp Duties. I have several examples of at least 2 of
the sets.

The older stamps I mentioned are quite nice to look at. In that box
of OZ I bought a few years ago, there may be more of these in there.
That's where they came from mostly.

I would agree.
Here is the explanation between postage and revenue use
of Victorian stamps by Stanley.

Yours being printed at the true "postage or revenue" period.

THE "POSTAGE AND REVENUE" PERIOD, 1884-1901

Under the provisions of the Postage Act 1883 the stamps of the three series
then in use (Postage, Duty, Fee) became, as from 1.1.84, mutually
interchangeable. It was, at the same time, decided to issue (as soon as
possible) the one stamp only, for any value, to serve all purposes. Since
there were available many more dies (and plates) inscribed "Stamp Duty" than
there were of either the "Postage" or "Fee" (Stamp Statute) series it was
agreed that all values should be inscribed "Stamp Duty" by the beginning of
1885. All stamps printed after 1.1.84 are therefore true "Postage and
Revenue" stamps whereas all Stamp Duty and Fee stamps printed before that
date are Postal Fiscals, since they were originally printed solely for
fiscal purposes. These principles have been strictly adhered to in our
listing. Little difficulty should however be met in distinguishing between
the printings of the one stamp found respectively in the main list and in
the "Postal Fiscal" section since there are many major differences of
printing, watermark, perforation and shade. On 1.1.84 there were no "Stamp
Duty" designs for the Vad., 2d., 4d., 8d. and 2s. 6d. values. Also the
existing "Stamp Duty" designs for the Id., 6d., Is. and 2s. were deemed to
be too large to be convenient for general and extensive use. For all these
values it was therefore necessary to produce new and smaller designs
inscribed "Stamp Duty". Pending the preparation of new dies and plates,
printings were made in 1884 (for the Vzd., Id., 2d., 4d., 6d., Is. and 2s.
values) from the existing "Postage" plates. These printings are also
"Postage and Revenue" stamps but have naturally been included, for the sake
of convenience, in the previous period. By the beginning of 1885 printings
were available, in the new designs, of all values save the Is. and 2s., and
these latter appeared later.

Rodney,

szkoda, że nie! 12.02.1966 był ostatnim dniem kiedy znaczki ze oznaczeniem
LSD-owskim [pounds, shillings, pennies (d) ] były ważne...

pozdrawiam, Rein
