Default Rotary Press Printing vs. Flate Plate Printing ?

Can someone out there tell me the difference between Rotary Press Printing
and Flat Plate Printing? I came across the two terms in connection with the
US Whistler-stamp 1934 (The Artist's Mother), Scott # 737 and 738. I have
what I believe to be #737, but would like to know the difference between the
two printing methods.

Thanks in advance.

Rotary Press uses curved plates, thus the stamp will be 'stretched'
slightly in the direction of curvature. There is a gauge that will
show whether a stamp is flat or rotary. If you have the US
Specialized, then you can measure the appropriate side, per the
dimensions given for the two printings.

I've no catalogs available right now, so perhaps a US poster could
look up the dimensions for you?

The rotary press version is perforated 11x10.5 and the flat press is
perforated 11.

Thank you very much, both JAMc and Al. At least I understand the differences
now. As per my understanding of Scott I assume that both varieties were
issued on May 2, 1934. With so minor differences, what was the reason to
print this stamp in two different methods?

Hello Mette:

For the difference in rotary and flat plate methods of
printing, I recommend the article at :
http://www.1847usa.com/washfrank/printingmethods.htm

An interesting article on this stamp can be found at:
http://www.ggriffith.com/mother.htm

Basically you have three stamps.

Scott
Number Printing Perforations
-----------------------------------------------------
737 Rotary 11 x 10.5
738 Flat plate 11 x 11
754 Farley issue Imperf.

Although the Mothers of America stamp was printed
by both the flat plate and the rotary press methods,
only the flat plate stamp was re-issued as a Farley.

Best Regards
Blair

Hello Blair,
Thanks for excellent answers and good references. So that's where #754 comes
in. I will study your links in depth tomorrow, and eventually make a note of
this on my Whistler-page.

Best regards
Mette
