Yes, this response is very effective. I see your point immediately. So I
have been guilty of top posting all this while. Very sorry for that. But I
do delete the non essential stuff with a [snip]. Strange that top posting
seems to be the norm at FPC and no one is complaining. But the moderator is
quite agitated if we don't remove the obsolete attachments when replying. I
guess we have to bottom post and [snip, snip] here

I stole that from somone's sig.

So I have been guilty of top posting all this while. Very sorry for
that.

It's so very common, in part because some newsreaders set people up to
top post by default. Top posting has been frowned upon for the entire
history of newsgroups and e-mail, which is now about 30 years or so.
My newsreader, Gnus (which runs as part of the Emacs text editor)
actually tries to prevent me from top posting by telling me "your text
is supposed to follow quoted text. Do you really want to post this?"
when I try to top post. Some newsreaders can be set in the
Preferences to not place the cursor at the top by default.

Like I said, a lot of software seems to set people up to top post, and
to the casual observer it even looks like it would make sense. There
are several consequences, including 500 line posts with a "That goes
for me, too" at the very top. It's also hard to tell what the top
poster is referring to in his or her statement, quite frequently.
And, as I pointed out, the flow of the conversation is backasswards.

But, it should be said, in an email exchange between two people
who remember what they're talking about, top posting is actually
more efficient (I did most of my work by email for 5 years: this
is not a theoretical point), which is why email clients are set
up by default that way, since more people use them for email
exchanges than for posting to newsgroups.

I'm a great one for traditions, especially when they're
functional, but "Thou shalt not top post" is not one of the
original Top 10 :-)

Sure, which is why I bottom post here. It was a response to a
post that seemed to imply that top-posting was always wrong.

Best

Michael
