The Hamilton Spectator - "Why is Turkey worried about being part of EU? because the poor "subsidised" greek beggars live next door and are crying for another $5billion in handouts?"...
gogu wrote: http://www.flash-bulletin.de/ 15 December 2006 The Hamilton Spectator - "Why is Turkey worried about being part of EU?": 14 December 2006 / by Tahir Aslam Gora The recent visit by Pope Benedict to Turkey was an effort to rebuild good relations between the Vatican and the Muslim world. But the response from many Turkish people was a bit harsh. There were rallies comprising of thousands of Turkish Muslims demanding the Pope's apology for earlier remarks -- taken to be anti-Muslim -- by Emperor Manuel II. At one, some Turkish Muslims were holding aloft a banner with slogan, "Jesus is a prophet of Islam, not son of God," while on the other hand demanding an apology from the Pope. Probably none of them thought that by negating Jesus as Son of God they are insulting the Christian faith. It seems the demand to respect faith runs just one way in some Muslim societies. This situation of the renaissance of Islam in Turkey reminds me of the novel My Name is Red, written by Turkish author (and Nobel Prize Laureate) Orhan Pamuk. In this novel, a Turkish sultan of the 16th century commissioned a cadre of the most acclaimed artists to illuminate the glories of his realm in European art style. Because this figurative art was deemed an affront to Islam, the artists he had commissioned were being murdered. Turkey has its own peculiar history and pressures from Islam (despite the secular efforts of Kamal Ataturk at the beginning of the 20th century.) With a unique past, Turkey is going through a mixing of secular and religious cultures. Turkey's secular elements blame the European Union (EU) for its decision, so far, not to admit Turkey as a member state. It seems secular forces fear that if the EU doesn't admit Turkey, the growing power of Islamicists (militant Muslims) will completely engulf Turkey's secular and modern manifestation. Every day, it seems, we hear from Turkey that rising "Islamicism" there is because of the frustration of lingering debate about Turkey's entry to the European Union. So, here the question arises: Why is Turkey's modernism dependent on a quick -- and positive -- decision from the European Union? What assurance is there that if Turkey is admitted to the EU, the Islamicists' hold would disappear -- and how? Turks should struggle to keep their country's modern and secular appearance for its own sake, without being concerned about becoming part of the EU. Do Japan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, India, Russia and South American states need to be worried about their modernity because they are not part of the EU? What, after all, is modernism? Westernization is not the only path to secularism and modernization. Social justice, secular actions, economic independency, democracy, free speech and freedom of individualistic values should be the pillars of a modern society. Japan is the best example of its kind. We do understand that such human values don't exist in 100 per cent pure form in any human society. But a modern and secular society must strive seriously toward them. If those values prevail in Turkish society, then that country doesn't have to worry whether it is part of the EU or not. * Tahir Aslam Gora is a Pakistani writer living in exile in Burlington.
