Separation of scanned images of several stamps
An interesting article written by the well known participant in this ng,
Bill Sharpe, just appeared in the last Linn's Stamps News. Bill describes his positive experience with the free program named "Stamp Image Bursting Application", that can be downloaded from he http://www.drakeserver.com/ The straightening of slanted images can be then done with different image editing programs, for example (says Bill) with the free MS Windows Live Photo Gallery. I have downloaded the program but I haven't tried it yet with a scan. So far I found it strange that I couldn't move the program's window, that positioned itself in the top left corner of the screen. BTW, the same can be done maybe easier but surely not cheaper... with Photoshop, as described on my old page: http://www.artonstamps.org/Magazine/...can-stamps.htm -- Victor Manta, PWO, AIJP ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Philatelic Webmasters Organization: http://pwmo.org/ Art on Stamps: http://artonstamps.org/ Romania by Stamps: http://marci-postale.com/ Communism on Stamps: http://reds-on.postalstamps.biz/ Spanish North Africa: http://www.sna-on.postalstamps.biz/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

After answering OK on the splash screen, one can move the main window normally. -- Victor Manta |

The online edition of Linn's was just published Monday. Thank you for the kind words. Photoshop does the job in one step rather than two, but as you points out it is expensive. I have also tried separating images with Photoshop Elements, a cheaper stripped-down version of Photoshop, but was not satisfied with the results. Your link to the alternate method at PCSG on the how-scan-stamps page is dead, as PCSG went out of business a few years ago. I tried to find the page on the WayBack Machine but there were 26,000 references to individual pages found... Bill |

I eliminated the dead link from my page; many thanks for trying to find an updated one. I also tested quickly Jason Drake's program and published the results on the same page: http://www.artonstamps.org/Magazine/...can-stamps.htm The results were good, as you wrote in your article. -- Victor Manta, PWO, AIJP ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Philatelic Webmasters Organization: http://pwmo.org/ Art on Stamps: http://artonstamps.org/ Romania by Stamps: http://marci-postale.com/ Communism on Stamps: http://reds-on.postalstamps.biz/ Spanish North Africa: http://www.sna-on.postalstamps.biz/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

Separation of scanned images of several stamps
Hi Bill and Victor,
Very interesting subject ! Thanks Victor for your post (and of course Bill for the Linn's article). I would be very keen to read it. Is it possible to look freely at Linn's online edition ? If yes what is the url to Bill's article ? If not, may be Bill could be so kind to send me a copy of his article (for my own private use only). BTW : I just visited Linn's website and registered to their free newsletter. But apparently, their last newsletter (dated April 12) does not mention Bill's review. I also discovered that they sell the Scott catalogue as an app for SmartPhones. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/scott...484086693?mt=8 But it is for the moment only available for Apple ; not Android :-( And the few comments from users are not very encouraging (just a copy of the catalogs, not possible to highlight stamps whereas it is possible in the PDF version of the catalogues). Also *very* expensive : 210 US $ for the set of 7 catalogs (if I understood correctly their advert) If this is right, I now find the Yvert (World catalogue plus monthly updates) online at 100 € (about 132 US $) as a bargain ;-) -- All the best, Pierre Courtiade to answer me, please replace NOSPAM by my family name |

You cannot read the article online because it is a paid service (btw, $10 a year, if I remember well) . Eventually take a look into your e-mail box for my more extensive comments on the subject. Amicalement, -- Victor |

Photoshop does the job in one step rather than two, but as you points
out it is expensive. I have also tried separating images with Photoshop Elements, a cheaper stripped-down version of Photoshop, but was not satisfied with the results. Bill If your scanner does not inclue an automatic recognition of various items placed on the bed, then using the FREE Irfanview, could be a better solution. However - with both programs mentioned, making a 'second step' involves loss of information unless an intermediate -=lossless=- file format is chosen. Irfanview does allow you to select a TWAIN source [scanner] and thus bring in the multiple stamps, separate and save. It's not as elegant as PS [rotation is much harder than using PS's ruler], but it is FREE! http://www.irfanview.net/ |

No, the online edition is only available to Linn's subscribers If not, may be Bill could be so kind to send me a copy of his article (for my own private use only). Victor has briefly described what I said in my column and given the link to Drake's site. I also mentioned that most graphic editors have a straightening (de-slanted is the term Victor used) feature that can be used. BTW : I just visited Linn's website and registered to their free newsletter. But apparently, their last newsletter (dated April 12) does not mention Bill's review. Linn's April newsletter wouldn't mention any articles appearing in May issues of Linn's. My column appears in the May 7 issue and probably won't be mentioned specifically in their next newsletter. Also *very* expensive : 210 US $ for the set of 7 catalogs (if I understood correctly their advert) I believe you'll find the online catalogs even more expensive than that. Each catalog comes in two parts and each part cost $30 US. If this is right, I now find the Yvert (World catalogue plus monthly updates) online at 100 € (about 132 US $) as a bargain ;-) |
