Finally done it!

I have managed to find first editions of all of Robert Parkers books - from
Godwulf Manuscript to $10 Dollar Baby. The final book was his second, God
Save the Child. According to sources, only 3500 printed in the first
edition.

It turned out to be a wonderful purchase, not simply to complete the "set".
My Seller threw in two ARCs of early Parkers, and after Christmas a copy of
$100 Dollar Baby arrived, brand new and signed by Parker. A wonderful
person, deep in the heart of Parker country.

As is my habit, I find writers I enjoy and gradually get all of their works
in first editions. This is a mania, I suppose, and a life-long one. Sure,
I know that most, like Parker, will have high prices on the early books and
low prices on almost all of the following, but it is fun to gather up the
complete lot. My shelves have complete runs of over twenty writers. Some
are easy with few titles - Thomas Harris, for example - but most of my
favourites keep on writing and one easily fills a shelf. Most are signed by
way of bookplates. Tracing down writers seems to have become a hobby as
well.

Congrats!

The hardest, for me, was MORTAL STAKES. I finally had to "settle" for a
Briitsh first, which was okay with me, as my DOUBLE DEUCE (signed) is
also the British edition. I don't have the newest one yet.

It is fun collecting Parker. Save for the early books, most one can find at
thrifts or garage sales in good condition. He has three now books scheduled
for 2007, including one that is apparently targeted at a new market - Young
adults.

Takes up a heck of a lot of shelves, but I find his books enjoyable enough
to read again from time to time.

It actually makes more business sense to simply look for the first three.
They have the highest value - many of the rest are simple to locate at
inexpensive prices. But all the books prior to his switching to Putnam
("Playmates)") seem to be increasing in price.

Hey Willow:

Congratulations. Not a Parker fan myself, but I feel your gain :-)
