It depends on many things, among them the stamps quality, who will buy them
(a dealer, many collectors) and how much time you are ready to invest in
this selling business (more you invest, more you get and learn).

Just to mention that stamps appraisal is a business too. An experienced
dealer can give you a quick estimation just after looking a few minutes
through you collection, eventually for free, but in principle TANSTAFA
(There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Appraisal).

For a few stamps you could ask here but the best is to take a look at the
stamps selling sites. For more info about selling a collection eventually
make a search though this ng postings.

Hello Victor,

Excellent answer, Victor, IMHO.
Please see also my response to the same question on
news:fr.rec.philatelie

BTW, I like this TANSTAFA principle :-)
It is the 1st time I've heard of it.

Have read and appreciated. BTW, something tells me that we will never hear
of Mr. Titi in the future. Hope to be wrong.

No wonder, because I have derived it from the better known TANSTAFL:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TANSTAAFL

Eventually could be used on a SNA cancellation device if the Postmaster
General & the Window Clerk #1 agree.

Hi,

You will be surprised by the quality. All series are complete, managed by a
real fan -almost professional in that field - most stamps if not all are new
or unused excepted some very old ones, real collectors items as are the 5
big albums that gather all stamps.
I think that I will sale it either via my web to the best offer or by public
auction.
In the best case, what could be a reasonable maximum price : I know that I
can easy get 2000 euros per album, so 10000 euros for all 5. I think that at
that price it is bargain, all the more that some shops told me that i can
get much more, but how many ?

Who could give me a range of prices or a maximum ?
thanks

As Victor Manta has pointed out, there is no such thing as a free appraisal.
But if you put in some effort, you can come up with your own answer. Borrow
a stamp catalog for each of the countries. Ignore all stamps that are
stained, torn, thin, or otherwise damaged. Add up the price of each stamp
that has a price above $10 (or 5 Euros, if the catalog is in Euros). If you
want to sell the collection to a dealer, expect 10% to 20% of the total. If
you want to sell it yourself item-by-item, expect perhaps 40%-50% of the
total, but you will have advertising and shipping costs to pay out of the
40%-50%, and the process probably will take some years.

I'm not a specialist in those countries, but I'd be surprised if there were
many stamps with catalog values above $10 or 5 Euros. Thus you may not have
a lot of effort to put in to get your own answer.

On auctions such as Ebay or Delcampe, similar material is lucky to get 10%
catalog, if in great condition.

Other similar lots are lucky to get 3%, since not exactly a popular area for
collectors.

A good lesson to keep in mind is this: if you are a skier, all you have
left after for a life of indulgence is memories (including, maybe,
memories of knee surgeries) and skill. As an oenophile, all you have
left after a life of enjoyment is memories and expertise, and maybe some
corks and empty bottles. After a lifetime of philately? You have lots
of great memories, skill, and expertise -- and, for most people, some
scrap you may be able to sell off on. $50 stamps pretty well. $1000
stamps sell. $1,000,000 stamps sell *very* *well*. But album-fillers
just don't Many dealers won't bother putting a stamp in a card, grading
it, and identifying it by catalogue number if it's worth less than $10.
The rest of the collection will probably be passed on by the kilo to
beginner to intermediate collectors. We're not talking world cruise,
we're talking "Oh, what a great time he must have had accumulating all of
this!"

If you love stamps, as we do here, this is where you should be. If you
love money, have no illusions. For instance, I have two separate sets of

German Empire stamp. Fascinating for me -- what the hell is it to anyone
else?

Completeness is cool but be aware that, most likely, some dealers will
explode the collection and sell the stamps off individually for people to
fill spaces with. KAP Stamps (no financial interest in the rec., but I
wholeheartedly recommend) would probably buy your albums, and do just
that. You could get the joy of having many peoples' albums improved --
but if you want to keep the stamps together, anything above 10% Scott
Catalogue Value at a profit is a pipe dream.

There is, however, one caveat. There *are* some sellers who specialize
in buying whole collections and selling them off intact. My fave is Dr.
Robert Friedman Stamps of Florida. He won't give you a private jet for
them, but he'll treat them lovingly, and send them intact to someone.
But the fact that he *sells* at something like 30% - 40% c.v. should give
you an idea of what you should expect to get. Scott -- and other cats --
are nowhere near the Kelley Blue Book.

I hope -- deeply hope -- that the preceding is exciting news for you, and
not depressing. Is there someone in the family who could be the new
custodian? That would be worth far more than the $$$.

I recently read, I cannot recall from whence,
that the philatelic elite, on hearing of the sale of the Roosevelt
collection,
considered it "junk"
This would tend to confirm your comments.
IIRC it realised around $200,000 at the time.

Yet having said that, I have seen Hutt River collections realise $300
and Penny blacks regulary realise over $1000 in my little hamlet.
It's a bit of a dog's breakfast out there.

I just find it somehow bewildering that someone can come on a newsgroup
and ask what a collection is worth.
He seems to have an idea what he thinks it is worth,
I get the feeling he is tugging chains.
