1961 Topps #1, Dick Groat
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dick Groat's 1961 Topps card, front and back shown he http://home.triad.rr.com/ovis/images/Groat-1.jpg http://home.triad.rr.com/ovis/images/Groat-1b.jpg Dick came up with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1952, after being a 2 time All-American basketball player with the Duke Blue Devils. In fact he was the college Player Of The Year in 1951. His number "10" was retired by Duke. You will note that the cartoon on the back of his card shows him wearing the number "9". In 1953 and 1954 he was in the military, but came back with Pittsburgh and played with them through 1962. Dick was the N.L. M.V.P. in 1960 (hence his card #1). He was also part of the World Series champs that year. He played with the Cardinals from 1963 through 1965, and was part of that team's World Series win in 1964. He was with Philadelphia in 1966 and 1967, and ended his career with San Francisco in 1967. Dick hit over .300 in '57, '58, '60, and '63, and had a lifetime .286 batting average. He led the N.L with a .325 batting average in 1960, and led the N.L. with 43 doubles in 1963. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- John Wade |

Dick Groat was always a great signer through the mail. Not sure about these
days, but up until several years ago, you could send him anything and he would sign it.
