Blair in Ankara for Cyprus, Mideast talks

Greek Cyprus has agreed with Germany, the next holder of the European
Union's term presidency, as of January, over the use of the Port of Limassol
on the southern part of the island for direct trade with the Turkish
Cypriots, news reports said yesterday.

In a move to water down the EU consensus on direct trade with the Turkish
Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC), Greek Cyprus is pushing for agreement
over Limassol, reported NTV television. The Greek Cypriots also want the EU
foreign ministers to endorse a document that says approval of direct trade
with the Turkish Cypriots does not mean the recognition of the KKTC, it
added.

The reported move by Greek Cyprus came yesterday, when British Prime
Minister Tony Blair, a staunch advocate of Turkey's bid to join the EU,
began a visit to Ankara. In a meeting with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip
Erdogan, scheduled for late on Friday, Blair was expected to convey a new
message on Cyprus as well as discuss steps to ease the isolation of the KKTC
and developments in the Middle East.
