Value of old German Bible
I have a very old German Bible and am interested in finding out its
value. Can anyone point me in the right direction? The Bible is a hard cover, leather-bound book, approx. 5" by 8" in size and about 2.5" thick. From the title page: Die Bibel oder die ganze Heilige Schrift des Alten und Neuen Testaments, Nach der deutschen Uebersetzung Dr. Martin Luthers. 1019. Auflage. Halle a. S., Druck und Verlag der v. Canstein'schen Bibel-Anstalt. 1887. (Of course, the book is printed in old German script.) If you can assist me in evaluating the condition and determining the value, I'd appreciate it. bookeval (at) earthlink (dot) net |

I have a very old German Bible [snip] 1887. 1887 is not old, as Bibles go. If it were a 16th or 17th century Bible it might have some value, but a 19th century Bible is unlikely to be of much economic value. The Bible is the most published book ever, and millions and millions of copies were published in the 19th century. If it is nicely illustrated, beautifully bound, or stands out in some other way, it may be of some value. Otherwise, perhaps $10-$20. John http://rarebooksinjapan.org |

John http://rarebooksinjapan.org I agree, with one comment: IF this is an old family bible, it's value lies in the association. No one else will care as much about it, thus the $10-$20. Kris |

Yes, the association is important. I've bought one old bible, and look for others, if they were published locally. They don't appear very often, but when they do, if the seller has listed all of the family names they'll go for around $30-70. (This is a c1830 bible, not 1887, though.) Without the names I might pick one up for $20 or so on eBay. -Allison -- .. |
