question
I've come to value the opinions I've seen here, so I want to ask your feelings
on the following. I recently acquired an autographed copy of John Sandford's HIDDEN PREY. It has a 1.5 inch circular gold sticker on the DJ saying, "Signed First Edition." I am afraid that attempting to remove the sticker will cause damage, so am I better off leaving the sticker or removing it? I am aware that this book is never likely to be a major collectible given the number of them published, but still . . . Thanks for your opinions. Dave Moore |

With enough finesse, I think almost any sticker of recent vintage can be removed. It's the ones that were left in place for 20 or 30 years that are difficult to remove without damage or staining. I am afraid that attempting to remove the sticker will cause damage, so am I better off leaving the sticker or removing it? I presume this is one of the copies signed on a tipped-in page, and the stickered jacket is as issued by the publisher. I know this can be a tough call, since the adhesive will probably stain the jacket in the long run, but my inclination is to leave such originally as-issued stickers in place--as opposed to bookstore stickers, or even stickers added by the publisher to later-issued copies of the book. For example, Fourth Estate just released Michael Chabon's latest book in two states: some copies with a signed tipped-in page and a sticker just like the one on your Sandford book, and most copies in a regular unsigned version. I have one of each, and I left the sticker in place on the signed copy--I figure it's part of the original package, so it should stay. If you do want to remove it, though, I think it would come off without damaging the jacket, assuming this is a slick jacket, and as long as you work slowly and carefully. -- Jon Meyers (To reply, lose your way) |

Unless the publisher went to the trouble (and expense) of foil-backed,
archival adhesive stickers, it will stain the cover in time. Probably in shorter time than you imagine. If it's a glossy DJ, use lighter fluid (like Ronsonol) to get it off. It works by thinning the adhesive, leaving some on the paper sticker, and some on the DJ. Residue is easily cleaned up w/ more lighter fluid on a paper towel. blc Jon Meyers wrote: "Daveblues" wrote... I recently acquired an autographed copy of John Sandford's HIDDEN PREY. Remove the dust jacket from the book. Use the hair dryer on the sticker for a few minutes. This will heat the glue and make it possible to peel off. After removing it, I have used "Clean Cover Gel" to clean up any residue. Or you can just leave the sticker on the book. Art Layton Stamford Ct |

Personally I'd leave the sticker on. In future years it might be the
preferred state. Chris The Haunted River The Rarest Ghost Story Collection Ever To Be Offered On Ebay?: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...2978 344&rd=1 |
