Please do not pursue this on my account. I am not interested in
buying any euros, or even cents, but I was considering whether any
euro coins should fetch prices well in excess of their face value. I
have a feeling that you will not find many Finnish 1 cent pieces in
your loose change - please let us know if you find one!

I seem to remember that when Finland adopted the euro, at the same
time as the other countries in Euroland, it decided that it would not
produce any 1 cent coins, although I believe that the collector sets
did include such a coin. I do not know whether 1 cent coins have
been minted since by the Finnish government for general circulation -
but I understand that the European Commission took a dim view of the
Finns' policy of refusing to accept other states' 1 cent coins as
legal tender.

Regards, Roger

Roger,

I am sorry to have mis-interpreted your question on the euro coins !

You are right with your statement in regard of Finnish 1 cent coins : on
the posts I wrote previously I forgot to consider the fact that Finland
decided not to use the 1, 2 & 5 cents coins.
I should have limited my post to 10 cents up to 2 euros, for what
concerns Finland :-)

It remains valid for Monaco & Vatican ?

Anyway, I am not at all a specialist, nor a collector of coins !

I prefer to collect ¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤ banknotes in order to buy nice old
engraved stamps :-)

Like so many others I read the new messages on this site everyday and
once in a while I add in my "two cents worth"
Collecting intrests include Children's Literature. Canada in WW II,
Elizabethan Bermuda, Reply Coupons and a type collection of world
postage meter imprints.
My greatest problem is that I never met a stamp I didn't want to collect
(thanks Will) and study.

Thank you, Pierre. My message was intended as a light-hearted challenge to
the proposition that euro coins should on be worth their face value, and not
fetch the high prices that you had seen asked for Finnish, Monagasque and
Vatican coins.

Surely though, since certain euro coins from these countries (and also
possibly San Marino) are unlikely often to be found in loose change, if a
coin collector wishes to complete his sets he will be willing to pay a
dealer - and, as with stamps, a market price will become established. If
the price seems too high, he will not buy the item.

Like you, my only reason for collecting coins is to buy stamps with them -
but usually I find it is banknotes I need to use, not coins.

Best regards, Roger

I collect primarily U.S. postal history --
Delaware County, New York, 1860-1920
Auxiliary markings, especially pointing hands

I have mostly dormant collections of used stamps from US, Canada, GB and
Germany.

Recently started collecting picture post cards but always look at the
cancel side as well.

I have been mostly absent for the summer, as I spend a lot of time at the
summer cottage we're renovating, and there is no computer there. Soon it
will be time to turn off the water there for the winter, which means I'll be
on the computer most days.

Pierre and Kaleb,

I also quit collecting America due to the abundance on new issues. I
still have the albums, but they are in a time warp, trapped forever in
1990. It was fun in the old days, hunting for just the perfect Columbian
or Zepp.

Kaleb KEITHLEY :
=A0=A0=A0=A0............
I gave up my US collection in 1999 when the USPS went bonkers with new
issues.
Kaleb,
In my answer to this interesting thread, I forgot to mention that I did
the same (giving up buying the new stamps issued by France from 2002 and
I should have stopped well before !)
