1961 Topps #8, Dick Williams
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dick Williams' 1961 Topps #8 card is shown here, front and back: http://home.triad.rr.com/ovis/images/008-Williams.jpg http://home.triad.rr.com/ovis/images/008-Williams-b.jpg Dick Williams had a 13 year playing career, but is best known as the controversial, but successful manager of 6 different teams over a 21 year period from 1967 through 1988. Dick came up with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1951, and was with them into the 1956 season, never getting much playing time. Brooklyn let him go in '56, and he was picked up by the Orioles. He was traded to the Indians in mid-'57, and then back to the Orioles before the '58 season. Although he played in 128 games for Baltimore in 1958, and had a batting average of .276, he was traded again to Kansas City after the season. He played the '59 and '60 seasons with the Athletics. In April of 1961, he was again traded to the Orioles, and even though he has on an Athletics uniform in the above card, he played all of '61 and '62 with Baltimore. He finished his playing career with the Red Sox in '63 and '64. Dick had a career .260 batting average. He started his managerial career in 1967, and took the Boston Red Sox to the American League Pennant that year. Dick was named the A.L."Manager Of The Year" in '67 by the Associated Press. After a 4th place finish the following year, and a 3rd place in '69, and some problems with the Red Sox star player, Carl Yastrzemski, Dick was fired. Dick didn't manage in 1970. He spent the year coaching the Expos, but in 1971 he was hired to manage the Oakland A's. His team won the division title that year, and Dick won his second "Manager Of The Year" award. In '72 and '73 his A's won the World Series, then he quit. Dick managed the California Angels from '74 through '76, and Montreal from '77 through '81, then went to manage the San Diego Padres in 1982. Two years later he would win his third "Manager Of The Year" award after taking his Padres to a Pennant win in 1984. He stayed at San Diego one more year, and then went to manage Seattle in '86, '87, and '88. He was fired early in the season, and called it quits. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- John Wade |
