I sold everything about a year ago for much more than I figured I could get. I
have a few cards laying around with sentimental value, but beyond that I can't
handle any more gimmicks and over production from the card companies to even
keep a small collection going.

At least the newsgroup is still here lol.

Wow, place sure is dead. Where did y'all go?

The market tanked after '01, the lemmings all scurried away, and I've only a
Ruth RC to show for it all.

As a small seller/vender at flea markets, shows etc., the number one
comment i get is: "i can get that on eBay for $$". EBay as absolutely
killed the card market.....particularly baseball cards. Because of the
relative ease of acquiring a numbered to 50 card for example, ebay has
caused an easy "demand" of search.
The pre-internet, eBay days would require endless footwork to and from
cardshows for that elusive card. Quite frankly i have no idea who
cardshows even survive today, even with the "personnel" touch. All
people care about (particularly men) is the price. Service and personnel
contact are secondary. Price is king and that is the internet and eBay's
"specialty". Lets not the the card companies off the hook however.
Production is ridiculous. Production is basically aimed at the 20-35 age
bracket because of the expendable income of this group (no kids, no
financial obligations, etc,). Kids are also lured because of the
game-used stuff. Kids are paying $12.00 a pack for a chance to acquire
some unproven prospect game-used card. Then they asked me how much is
it "worth"? and if i would like to buy it. Nice lottery ticket mentality
for the kids ya??
Sorry of rambling on..............Dan.

Ebay hasn't "killed the market". Perhaps it's killed the small show market.
It's unfortunate that it affects you directly, but that doesn't make it bad
for the collector. I think that Ebay has been a huge boost for
collecting. You can find what you want at the price that you are willing to
pay. It is much closer to a true "market" than ever before.

The manufacturers are the problem. Pumping out loads of crap like there's no
tomorrow. They have no interest in what's good for the market for the next
generation, but rather making a short term buck. I really don't understand
why anyone collects anything but vintage. Even the "retro" stuff they have
made to get a piece of the vintage market is not "vintage-like" at all. I
defy anyone to identify a set made in the last 10 years that resembles the
sets of the glory years of the '50s, '60s, and early '70s. They have tried
to replicate the "look", but have dirtied it with parallels, autographs,
game-used, and glitz.

I concur.

I've said before that ebay isn't a bad thing. Sure it hurts sales from the
secondary market, but that's not ebay's fault. Just like many other middle men
in other specialties, ebay is squeezing them out just as Home Depot squeezed
out the local lumber yards and Walmart squeezed out the local mom and pop
stores. The only difference is with ebay anyone can get in on the action.

It's a greater time to collect pieces of cardboard than ever. It's just a
really BAD time to hope that they are ever worth more than you initially paid
for them. As long as you do it for the fun of it, such as with match books or
bottle caps, you are fine.

The problem....again...is with the manufacturers, if you consider it a problem
at all. It's not a problem from their standpoint because pre orders are still
through the roof, no matter how much garbage they spew out. Until you idiots
stop buying it all they will keep the presses rolling.
