got a few more "odd" silver coins

Thanks for the input on my THALER. It may go to ebay today or tomorrow
I have a few more odd foreign coins (JPG's) to share with this group.
This group of "junk" came from a friend's grandfather along with the 2/3
thaler.

The Gordian III silver is collectable (about 240 AD); the Saxony
chicken coin is nice. The other coin appears to be a denarius of some
Roman Republic moneyer (about 60 BC give or take 10 years).

Oly is correct, the Gordian III (238- 244 AD) coin is an antoninianus
and could probably bring $40-50 or so. Reverse of that coin shows
Aequitas (who symbolizes fair dealing, hence the scales in her right
hand).

The other Roman coin looks like a denarius of the late Republic issued
by the moneyer T. Carisius (46 BC). Obverse shows the goddess Juno
Moneta (who oversaw the mint) and the inscription MONETA. Reverse
shows the tools used in minting (top and bottom coinage dies, tongs
used to hold the planchet, and hammer) and above should say T CARISIVS
(can't see that part on your coin). But this one looks a bit, um,
mooshy to me, and I'm not sure if that's just due to poor preservation
or if it is a cast copy. If genuine, it wouldn't fetch very much in
that condition, but given any possibility of doubt I personally
wouldn't sell it until a dealer with experience in ancients has
examined it in person and pronounced it genuine.

Don't know anything about the chicken coin, but it looks neat and is
probably worth something to somebody.

If these are from your friend's grandfather's collection, why do you
insist on calling them junk silver? Junk silver is what you buy in
bulk from a dealer, not out of some unknowledgable persons
inheritance.

About 2 years ago, I auctioned off most of a collection from the above
mentioned "grandfather".
In the collection was a small old plastic soap box with a small piece of
green paper that matched the folded ones with coins and his handwriting on
them. It did indeed say JUNQUE SILVER and contained an assortment of coins,
such as, but not limited to the ones I had questions about that were posted
to this NG. His grandson (my friend, still to this day) was pleased with
what the identified coins sold for. He said just keep the junque ones!
I do not think, were his grandfather still alive, he would take offense at
my changing "junque" to junk.
Lots more interesting stuff to look at.

at $14.43 per oz today, means that every 90% silver US coin is worth
over 10 times face value, none of it is 'junk', although common date,
well worn coins are 'junk silver'.

Junk silver Roosevelt dimes are selling for about 12X-13X face on eBay
today. Solid rolls of Mercs seem to get a bit more.

The other coins are not something I would know about ... they look ancient
to me, perhaps later Roman coins. But that's just a guess. I've got a
handful of ancients from specific places and specific times, but I don't
really "collect" them.

Anyone else take a look at these?
