Default refilling cartridges (was: Why all good citizens...)

On 11 Jul 2003 at 14:28:31 GMT, Al Wesolowsky scribbled:
-My dentist gave me a (normally disposable) translucent "Monoject
-412" plastic syringe, with a curved plastic "needle" for refill-
-ing the carts, and it works like a charm.

My dentist gave me a "normally disposable" gizmo that looks more
like what might be called an eye-dropper-plunger than like what
people think of when the word syringe is used.

-And is not covered by the Massachusetts ban on people possessing
-hypodermic needles.

It's ironic that at the same time, governments are *giving away*
hypo needles to drug users! But if a fountain pen user asks about
getting one to refill ink cartridges, the answer is, to put it
politely, "No way, Jose!" (Especially in a place like Censornati!
grin)

Considering the legal sensitivities surrounding the word "sy-
ringe," we fountain pen dinosaurs might do well to come up with some
nicer-sounding word.

Anyhow, as the poster noted, the Etch-Rite gizmo I got works like
a charm! It's even better than the jet-tipped quarter-inch glass
tubes that a high school science teacher of mine made for this same
purpose many decades ago. (That was back around the time of the Van
Buren Administration.) It's the answer to a decades-long problem of
how to economically refill cartridges (in pens where converters
don't fit.)

You can also get these from any hobby store that sells plastic models or
balsa wood kits. Just ask for a 'glue injector'. I've had one for years now
and actually prefer refilling an old Sheaffer Skrip cartridge to using the
converter since the cartridge holds more ink and and makes less of a mess.

You can also get these injectors from pharmacies that specialize in
vetinary medicines. My sister's pet rabbit got sick once, and they gave her
a bunch of these injectors in order to give the rabbit his medication
orally. Since I use Sheaffers alot, I cut one of them so that the hole is
the same width as the tube as the cartridge fits in and use it to flush the
pen.

Peace - Big Lou
