"Report: European Parliament comes to terms with Turkey's conditions on Cyprus protocol".
http://snipurl.com/dilp gogu wrote: Turkish Daily News - "Report: European Parliament comes to terms with Turkey's conditions on Cyprus protocol": ANKARA / 17 January 2006 The European Parliament is ready to encourage the European Union Council to release a financial aid package designed to improve the economy of the northern part of Cyprus, in exchange for Turkey's implementation of a key protocol extending Turkey's customs union with the EU, including newcomers such as Greek Cyprus, according to a Greek Cypriot media report. In a report titled "European Parliament bows to Ankara's conditions," Greek Cypriot daily Phileleftheros claimed that it had obtained a copy of a document in which the Turkish government's stance of refusing to open Turkey's ports and airports to traffic from EU-member Greek Cyprus was noted, NTV television channel said. The daily, however, did not elaborate on what kind of a document it had. Ankara says that economic isolation of the Turkish Cypriots should be lifted simultaneously with Turkey's opening its ports and airports to Greek Cypriot ships and planes. Ankara signed an EU protocol extending its customs union deal with the bloc to the 10 new EU members, including Greek Cyprus, last year but said that this did not amount to recognition of the Greek Cypriot government. Both the executive European Commission and the European Parliament "bowed to" Ankara's conditions, Phileleftheros reported, saying that European lawmakers will call on the EU Council to release the financial assistance package to Turkish Cyprus that was proposed by the European Commission in July 2004 to reward the Turkish Cypriots for their support of a U.N.-proposed peace plan last year. The 259 million-euro EU funding package has been stuck in Brussels' coffers ever since due to objections from the Greek Cypriots to the coupling of the aid to commission-proposed direct trade between Turkish Cypriots and the EU. With Greek Cyprus, a full member of the EU since May 2004, blocking trade proposals, the EU last year seemed to have separated the aid and trade proposals. Yet, almost half of the total money earmarked for the 2005 budgetary year was lost because it was not approved by the EU Council on time, leaving no legal way to release the sum even if the whole package is approved some time this year. -- E' mai possibile, oh porco di un cane, che le avventure in codesto reame debban risolversi tutte con grandi puttane!
