Doesn't portable mean it takes batteries? If the motor is AC powered,
it shouldn't be portable.

However, I will say those Mark 8s are awesomely beautiful!

Oops- I meant the RCA 'Mark 8' player. I've always liked the design of
those, since I first saw it on the generic cut-out blue RCA sleeve
(used on the 'picture box' RCA tapes that went into cut-out bins).

That is how the deck is DESIGNED- there is a needle that moves up and
down on the 1-2-3-4 channel switch scale, which is illuminated when the
deck is ON, so you can see how far off from standard the tape is you
are playing- i.e. the needle will be above or below the channel number
you are on, as you are adjusting it, if the tape was originally
recorded a bit high or low on the track assignments. The needle will
be "dead nuts" on the number, for tapes that were recorded correctly
from the factory.

It's pretty neat actually.

Very similar to the tracking meter on a VCR- there's center, but most
tapes track to right or left of that dead center indicator while you
are adjusting the tracking.
