I keenly enjoy exploring things of interest in the realm of numismatics, and thus I am really pleased to find this newsgroup. Welcome to the collective! Ostensibly there is a lot of saber rattling by different factions within the group's readership. I often see barbed (sometimes veiled, sometimes not), jousting back and forth between parties. Has this pretty well been taking place all along in this newsgroup, or is the election of various organizational officers the catalyst that has generated such posts? Thanks for helping an oldster like me to understand. First, it's not at all uncommon in usenet for newsgroups to factionalize. The freewheeling nature of usenet makes it all but inevitable. In here, there area few factions. A brief lowdown: 1) Reid vs the Anti Reids. Many heartfelt opinions have been exchanged between these folks and some good discussions as well, but the threads rapidly degenerate into Reid being attacked for past conduct and his writing techniques. 2) The ANA faction. I'm a member of this one, we spend most of our time trying to get ANA board members who post to make substanisve comments on the issues of the day. Current topics include the ugly new logo and how it came about and the ANA election. 3) The AntiACG faction. I'm a member of this one as well. You can go to Eric's webpage to get the details on ACG, I'll spare the rest of the group a repeat of the details. COINGRADER is an ACG employee named Clayton and he's basically just stirring things up. 4) The counterfeit bunch. One side feels that it's okay to collect counterfeits, the other side feels it is not. Much legal noise slung by both sides, some practical advice dispensed. Most of the other curmudgeons here act on their own. :-) Now, don't let any of this scare you off. Your killfile is your friend and you can use it to taylor the newsgroup to your liking. One day we may be discussing 14th century dutch coinage, the next we may be discussing the differences between the various grading services MS69's. For myself, I like half cents, Early proofs and liberty 5c patterns. What do you collect? Bruce |

I'm going to assume that this is not yet another only slightly veiled troll message, that you are who you purport to be and that you are posting this query honestly. I may be wrong. There have been a number of posts like yours within the past few weeks asking about this newsgroup that seem to have ulterior motives, which appear to have been responded to, using different names, by the very person who posted them. This newsgroup is no different from many/most others. There's good information and advice to be found here, and there are some really dumb people who like to instigate. And there are some really bright people who like to instigate. And there's lots of fellowship and humor and all the rest. This group's messages fall along the old Bell curve, with a few really great, a few really awful, and with most falling along the continuum from fairly dull or chatty to moderately interesting or useful. If you want to see more interesting/useful messages, the best way to promote this is to post them yourself. -- Coin Collecting: Consumer Guide: http://rg.ancients.info/guide Bogos: Counterfeit Coins: http://rg.ancients.info/bogos Glomming: Coin Connoisseurship: http://rg.ancients.info/glom |

"Maja" wrote in message news:NZzMa.17431$926.647@sccrnsc03... Hi Folks, I've just began reading here in this newsgroup a few weeks ago. -Maja When I first started reading the group, I thought I had found an online gentlemen's coin club. For quite awhile, I read nothing worst than good advise sometimes delivered without tact. After reading the group for awhile, I do not carry as gentle an impression of the group as I did when I first started reading. It is my understanding that there were divisions before I started posting and there has certainly been divisions since my initial readings. All possibilities of conflict or alliance are possible here. At times, there have been factions develop between posters that are temporary, later they will be allied and respectful of each other. There is likely permanent conflict between some posters, given the different personalities of posters and the different objectives posters have as reason to participate in the group. Sometimes, I think I have seen bad blood arise simply because it is not always easy to convey typed words with the intent the words come into our minds. I, personally, have been misinterpretted a few times, although I have easily explained my intentions and meanings without causing further problems. It is my understanding that this group does well when compared to most newsgroups, when speaking of discordant correspondence. Rcc is the only newsgroup I have frequented so I do not have personal experience. Keep in mind, also, that there are times when the newsgroup is visited by a poster whose only purpose is to disrupt. To one new to the group, it would not be obvious when this occurs, at least not at once. I have been impressed on an occasion or two when I innocently accepted a post as sincere and others would immediately recognize the post is bogus. OTOH, there have been a few times when someone has jumped on a new poster as insincere, and have wrongly done so. Arguments and debates should not be considered unnecessary noise in the group, even when the heat level goes up a little. But, these type of threads will sometimes turn personal, lose the topical content, and should then be ignored or read for entertainment only, unless of course, one wants to take sides. Again, all possibilities. HTH, Bill |

All rcc dues (which are now in fact due) should be made payable to me, and definitely not to the individuals named by JJ SilverBucks (including JJ Silverbucks or any other individual claiming such authority). I also take this opportunity to remind all `members' that lifetime subscriptions are now available for a one-off payment of $39 (this IS a limited time offer). Special discounts are available for family memberships and individuals with zips at the back of their heads. Contact me for further details and for a mail address for cash / cheque payments or my paypal account. As the elected GrandMaster JJ SilverDollar, it's my job to keep trolls and their shenanigans to a minimum, so as not to offend new potential members that stop by. A relatively easy task, until challenged by one of the senior Troll Du Jour Witless HalfCents like our Reid Goldsbooger or others too numerous to name. Hi Reid,
I'm going to assume that this is not yet another only slightly veiled troll message, that you are who you purport to be and that you are posting this query honestly. Well, let me quickly affirm that such would be an apt and proper assumption on your part, then. I recognize that there are those who will seize any opportunity to stir up strife and discord faster than a hungry roach can jump on an unguarded Twinkie. But such is not my identity nor my purpose. I simply saw after a few weeks of reading that there is a lot more content here in the newsgroup than that which pertains strictly to coin collecting. Having read other posts (in response to my query of this morning) about folks who assume different identities so as to talk to themselves here in the postings, I can affirm that I do not converse with myself, neither verbally nor by the written word. (At least, not yet. But I am getting older, and one never knows what sort of unknown mental lapse may lie ahead for the unsuspecting enthusiast.) I think that I have been given some good advice, to simply choose what appears to be of benefit to me, and to refrain from reading the comments of those who aspire to be backbiters and mudslingers. Thus, I heartily endorse such a posture, and will endeavor to gain as much good as is available to me. My thanks to all who replied to my post. I have a better sense as to what this is all about now. Sincerely, Maja |

Bruce Hickmott isn't as rabid as some of the others here, but the above is total poppycock. His putting this as the number one contentious "reality" here is funny, as if this is bigger than the ACG controversy or the ANA vote or the market grading debate or the White God racist and other troll junk and so on. What's more, in actual reality, there are no Reid and Anti Reids. There are only Anti Reids. I'm a chimera. The existence of the Anti Reids is an existential necessity brought on by my use of words such as "chimera" and by my having nicer coins than anybody else. -- Coin Collecting: Consumer Guide: http://rg.ancients.info/guide Bogos: Counterfeit Coins: http://rg.ancients.info/bogos Glomming: Coin Connoisseurship: http://rg.ancients.info/glom |
