Where do these Ebay coin sellers find their coin hoards? I'd love to start
a small online shop but paying retail then trying to sell them won't get me
very far.

I think they find them on EBAY and some of the other auction services.
Email me for some more information if you are interested in starting a
shop. I might be able to help out.

I can't speak for all, but original estate sales seem to be a prime
target. An elderly miser salts away coins for years (a la Scrooge
McDuck), then passes away. The decendant's beneficiary contacts a
local auctioneer or estate disposition company and dumps off the hoard.
Contrary to whatever they may say ("we are not coin collectors"), they
DO have numismatists available to search and identify the good stuff.
That's why most of us won't buy anything off ebay from an estate sale.
Even the local original sale won't get us to buy a hoard without the
opportunity to check it out in more detail.

That is true as well. I have had several people tell me about coin
hoards that Grandpa had over the years. I have purchased a couple of
them. One I didn't buy had about 300 barber coins and a couple of gold
coins. I went through them and almost all of the barbers were slick. I
thought that was odd. They ended up keeping them. The year was 1976.
Another story - I was at a coin auction and a lady that sat behind me
asked if I cold look at her Dad's coins they found after he died. When
they were going thru his lock box the attorney picked up some legal
papers and 14 gold coins fell out on the table! They had no idea he had
them. They were all really nice coins. 12 US and 2 French. I tried to
buy them but they ended up not wanting to sell them. As far as I know
they still have them 25 years later...............
