News From Lake Woe-Is-Us.
The fantasy:
"here's our clubhouse, you can see the tennis courts, volleyball court, basketball courts, playground, boat launch, lake, trout stream inlet into lake, sand beach, parking area. Inside is the heated indoor pool, hot tubs, weight room, bar, restaurant, arcade, indoor racquetball/basketball, lounge areas, offices." The reality (Current news from behind the "gates"): "The dining room needs new carpeting, and is dark, even on the brightest days. The smoke and foul language coming from the bar makes it impossible to dine out with your family. The dining room, as it is today, is certainly not a family type setting. The Community has not put money back into the existing restaurant in years, and has been viewed by past Boards as a white elephant that has done nothing but drain community funds." "Have you actually looked at the proposed site of this pavilion? It is an embarrassment to the community. The dock is falling down and much of it is laying in the water. There are boats stacked in the background, and some of these boats have not been registered in years. Most do not have a current Beech Mountain Lakes sticker." "The engineer representative explained that DEP, the Department of Environmental Resources, has studied area dams and considers the dam at Beech Mountain to be a "high hazard." Mullens warned that DEP is mandating a new, larger spillway to be constructed. If the mandate is ignored, DEP could breach the dam and drain the lake to eliminate the threat." "It was reported that the campground is open, but offering electricity only, the water and restroom facilities remaining closed. Grove said the facility produced $300 dollars in income last year, and cost $20,000 dollars to operate. The huge liability, and loss it represents was discussed. Presently, the holding tank is leaking and both grinder pumps are broken. Repairs are estimated at $5,000 dollars. The association is charged $600 dollars per month for sewerage. Vandalism is also a problem there." |

Once they've closed escrow, the gutting of the "community facilities" begins in earnest, as what's happening at Nudo Mountain Mudpuddle shows. |
