How do you catalog your books?

You jabber on and on about it interminably and then when some poor ******* complies with it you berate him. 1.6 How Do I Advertise My Cool Website? Add the information below your "signature". It is considered rude to just blurt out an ad, but if you join in the discussions people will see the information, and be more interested in visiting as well. I want to know what features you lack in current software solutions to managing your personal collection of books. I am asking so that I can develop something to cater to you! Some examples of problems you face could be: - I need to keep track of different editions of books I own - I need to search my collection by ISBN - I need to find all the editions of a book I own - I want to find all the books by the author of a particular book SD |

How do you catalog your books?
I have a problem with that and here's the problem. I already went
through this cycle with spinfree/singlefile. http://www.spinfree.com/store/ The problem being that an ambitious indivdual such as yourself has this starry-eyed conviction that they'll be the next ebay or yahoo or amazon. Then it doesn't work out or they get hit by a car and then they fold up. And then the time and effort (and money) one has put into working with the site is out the window. That's why I try and use software from more than a one-person shop. Currently I use ReaderWare but I am suspicious of them as well. So I would never put my data online and I make sure that whatever program I use is in a known format and that it will export the data into a comma-delimited format so I can move to the Next Big Thing (which is unlikely to be a site featuring books and recipes) when needed. I don't care about your sig line, and it isn't against the rules. But you didn't identify yourself in your original post as the operator of this service, just asked how we catalogued our collections. That, above your sig, told me - and I'm not the only one - that you were NOT interested in our opinion, but sneakily advertising your website. It happens all the time here, and we're understandably wary (as well as weary) of it. |

to managing your personal collection of books. I am asking so that I can develop something to cater to you! Some examples of problems you face could be: - I need to keep track of different editions of books I own - I need to search my collection by ISBN - I need to find all the editions of a book I own - I want to find all the books by the author of a particular book Mine: - must be usable on a Mac, preferably both OS9 and OS X - must be able to export records in the format used by the National Library of Scotland's catalogue, as I expect I'll be leaving some of my stuff to them and I'd like to make it as easy as possible for them to deal with it. Those are absolutely non-negotiable - if they're not there from the start, forget it. But the four requirements you list above don't matter to me at all. You should support bibliographic identifiers besides ISBN - there are lots of standard bibliographies for older books. It would help to let users create public labels for such things - e.g. if there's a standard bibliography for pre-Bolivar publications from Latin America, you don't want people coming up with unrecognizably different ways of referring to it. And remember that the same book may be indexed in many bibliographies. ============== j-c ====== @ ====== purr . demon . co . uk ============== Jack Campin: 11 Third St, Newtongrange EH22 4PU, Scotland | tel 0131 660 4760 http://www.purr.demon.co.uk/jack/ for CD-ROMs and free | fax 0870 0554 975 stuff: Scottish music, food intolerance, & Mac logic fonts | mob 07800 739 557 |

No blockhead, not to me, to the guy who you called a pimp. Remember? He posted a reasonable question relating to book collecting which question complied with the precious FAQ in every way which post you completely misinterpretted in your haste to play net nanny and so you slandered him and reported him to his ISP and did whatever the hell else you poor impotent *******s do to make yourselves feel good about your miserable lives and your stupid collections of scifi paperbacks and comic books and whatever the hell else. He's the one who deserves an apology. Of course he won't get one, not from a mutt like you. |

I have no intention of being ebay or yahoo or amazon or anything big. I don't even intend to make a living out of the site. So far it is just a hobby site. It just about pays for its own costs and I'm happy with that. Even if it doesn't I'll still keep running the site because I like to do it! That's why I try and use software from more than a one-person shop. Currently I use ReaderWare but I am suspicious of them as well. Hehe, yeah sure that is something I agree with you on and acknowledge as a problem with my site. I've got too many things going on there. Exporting and importing from various formats seem to be very important to people here and other places. I am working on that. Thanks!
