AOL Spamfilters and 8.0 and The Lost Ian E-Mail - Yo Tim!
OK, listen up and gather round the campfire for the benefit of what I've
gleaned from 5 months or so of 8.0. Don't ask if any of it's been checked by AOL, it hasn't.This is all just what I figgered on my own and FWIW. Whether or not you have made Spam filter choices, etc., a certain amount of the Internet puss is still being diverted to an on line (read "web") AOL mailbox via default settings that are hardwired to collect certain crap (see thread of a couple months back, where Bigg Fredd and I went at it). OK (authorized by virtue of being received before, but not neccessarily in my address book) Yahoo and Hotmail addys that used to get through to my 4.0 AOL just fine, are now "occasionally" but not always, getting jammed in the web mailbox. So the consistency isn't great. OTOH, anyone in my address book is getting through fine, but BFD, right? So..........If you open your regular AOL mailbox (in the browser), you will see a box at top left that says Mail Options. If you drop it down and click Check Other Mail, it will take you to aol.com at the mailbox login. Enter and you'll see your web mailbox with an extra tab on it marked Saved Mail. Not at all sure what that's about yet, as it has combined within it, crap that I both saved "and" deleted on my browser mailbox. Very strange. Anyways, down below the mailbox you'll see blue hotlinks that say (from L-R) Spam Folder (# of e-mails within), Spam Controls and Recently Deleted mail which really is some of the stuff you did delete and other. Playing around for a couple days will give you an idea what's going on. But an e-mail to AOL Tech Support with a simple question, still yields 7 responses; 3 virtually identical boilerplate and 4 that thought outside the box and musta responded out of view of Big AOL Brudda, cuz they actually had some good info. Ian's e-mail is in this web based cluster somewhere Tim. Don't worry. Nothing's gonna bite you if you try this. I don't know how this whole spam filter thing is going to pan out, but for now my mails are hitting their target and other than one OK Hotmail getting netted and retained, all outside ones are getting in to me. This web based vs browser dual mailbox thing is a royal PITA though. I don't like checking 5 mailboxes and/or tabs/links to see what I could have missed. Maybe it's time to make the leap to Juno.......bwahahaha. Always here for my fellow syngraphist or oenophile. --=*=----=*=----=*=----=*=----=*=----=*=----=*=----=*=----=*=----=*=-- |

No need to jump out to the webmail. Robert Shaw -- Does olive oil really help with corroded coins? Check out my experiment at: http://www.mindspring.com/~robe294/o...xperiment.html |

I heard that 9.0 is blocking any mail with an attachment. Is that true? Nope, not true. I send files back and forth to myself between my work and AOL accounts. And, UNFORTUNATELY, still have a few friends that send the infinitely forwarded crap -- "Hey! Check this out, it's funny!!!" They always come in ok. You can set it up to block attachments in your mail controls, but by default
it does not do this. if it is, it is because either you or the master account set it this way. I think the new spam filters work pretty well. I do wish they had not changed the font sizes and layout inside the filing cabinet though. I really dislike the new way it is. "BobbyShaw" wrote in message ... I think the new spam filters work pretty well. I do wish they had not changed the font sizes and layout inside the filing cabinet though. I really dislike the new way it is. One of the most annoying things I've found about the new mail format is, it won't let you copy and paste e-mail addresses off the e-mail headers! I needed to do this when I was keeping track of the holiday swap notices... copying the e-mail addresses into a spreadsheet, and the only way I could do that was to go through 4 steps steps (click on the senders name, click the "send mail" button, copy the e-mail address off the new e-mail page, and then close that e-mail without sending). VERY annoying! -- Does olive oil really help with corroded coins? Check out my experiment at: http://www.mindspring.com/~robe294/o...xperiment.html |
