COMPLETING ST. PAUL'S. APPEAL FOR ?70.000.

ENLISTING PUBLIC INTEREST. (Aug 1925)

Speeches at Town Hall Meeting.

His Excellency thc Governor (tho Kuri of Stradbroke), thc Primo Minister
(Millrace), Archbishop Lees, nnd the Lord Mayor of Melbourne (Councillor
W.Brunton) addressed a large gathering of representative citizens in thc
Town Hall yesterday afternoon in connection with the St. Paul's Cathedral
towers appeal, the object of wliich is the collection of ?70,000 to proceed
with tho work of completing the cathedral. Thc erection of a central

tower and spire and two western spires is necessary to give effect to tho
original plan.

Tho Lord Mayor, who presided, said that the foundation-stone of the
cathedral laid by the Marquis of Normanby on April 13, 1880. It had become
recognised widely that thc time was now opportune for the completion of thc
structure lo be undertaken according to the original design. Thc appeal was
not confined exclusively to the Anglican communion, but thc cathedral
belonged to all citizens, and was an inspiration to people of the metropolis
as well as to visitors from all parts of thc State.

Even getting the wretched thing started in the first place needed a
