Radio carts
Hey guys,
I just saw the Howard Stern movie, "Private Parts", and I noticed a bunch of carts in the station that look like 8-tracks. How much alike/different from 8-tracks are those cartridges they used on the radio? Do they still use those on the radio anymore? -- Davetta |

They're similar in concept and shape (although they did come in larger sizes as
well). Differences include the pinch roller being part of the player and not the cart. It would swing up from beneath the cart and enter the cart through a hole in the bottom of it. Also there was a positive locking mechanism that kept the spool from rotating when the cart wasn't being played. The spool was notched all the way around, providing spots for the locking wire to engage. At my college radio station (78-82) we had a machine for loading custom-length carts from a large pancake of the special lubricated tape. I don't know if any stations still use them, but when I visited my old college station in the late 90s even they had switched to digital for PSAs and stuff. A small local AM station I worked at in the mid-80s was still using carts then. Knowing how cheap that station was, they probably still are. In a few smaller sattions where I'm at they still use them. I'm told
when they wear out (equipment and carts) they will switch completely over. I used them on my album. Dan #3 "Davetta Lashley" wrote in message ink.net... As far as the design of the carts themselves, they're identical to the
8 track's predecessor, the 4 track cart. It's only the recording process that is different between the original 4 track cart and the radio station carts. (Dan #3) wrote in message om...
