What a great way to encourage the circulation of these coins!Bravo! If you can, find out if any of your co-workers are being asked for these coins.I'll bet that word will get out and people will eventually start looking for them there, since they now know where they can get them. great job. (By the way,I am putting some of my old 'wheaties' in 2x2's tonight to add to the goodie bags for halloween.Maybe encourage some new collectors.I know some of you have been doing this for years,so I thought I'd give it a try.) I didn't realize how much fun it is to spend these less circulating coins! Hats off to you, Eric! That's a great idea that you have put into action! I have been avidly getting $2 bills from the bank for at least 30 years and have had lots of fun spending them all around, and giving them as tips. Just in the past year, I decided to spread some Kennedy halves around the community. That has been a heck of a lot of fun, as well! I get them a bag at a time (1,000 coins) and then spend them for all sorts of things -- haircuts, groceries, gasoline, dinner, etc.,etc. Only one place thus far has refused them. I tried to buy a $30 money order at the Post Office a few weeks ago and they wouldn't take them. Every other place has welcomed them with wide eyes and an even wider smile! Just picked up the fourth such bag yesterday and went through them last night. I found 10 of the 40% silver Kennedys in this bunch, and several others dates and mints that I needed for my circulated set of Kennedys. This was not as well as I've done with the other bags, but enjoyable nonetheless! All the best to you in your numismatic pursuits! Larry |

I just had a thought about circulating Kennedys. Not too long ago, I spent a
1997 (I don't remember where). The clerk took it without any problem, noticed the date, and then said (ready for this?), "Wow, they still made these?" I told them halves have been struck continuously since 1964. His response was, "Really?" (Cue the numismatic guy!) Well, having opened the curiousity door, I gave him a brief spiel about 1964 90% silvers, 1965-1970 40$ silvers, 1971-present clads, silver proofs, mint set only issues, etc. I think I sparked some interest in a new half collector. Anyway, the point is that if we can get really current issues and get people to notice them, they may realize that halves are still available and should be used in places other than slot machines. Q: What was the first year halves were not struck?
A: The year of the Big Bang, guestimated about 15 billion years ago, give or take a few eons. Jerry :-D Having been caught in a misstatement yet again, "Ed," "Bruce," and "DyzeeGF3" remind me, thusly: Ed: Actually, Jerry, halves have been struck continuously since 1794 (with a 4-yr break between 1797-1801). Jerry Now, now, Jerry. It was those slot mackines tha got me interested in halves. I have always had a weakness for the hefty type. Haven't been in a casino for awhile, but I hear they are mostly tokens now.:-((( Skinny little tokens, yuk. I use halves to give change at our farm market. One boy and his dad noticed, dad asked if the kid knew what it was. A dollar, dad says no, you've never seen one of these before. So it even started a conversation between a dad and his son.
