Greece 25 L lilac Hermes
A friend has a 25 L lilac Hermes head that appears to be what Scott calls a
"clear" impression. Yet Scott only lists the 25 L lilac with a "poor" impression. The image of both a "poor" impression 25 L and the stamp in question is at: http://cjoint.com/?enn3J5srI2 Can anyone explain what the stamp on the right is? Early printing before plates wore? Color changeling of the 25 L clear impression blue? Fake? Other? Any help would be appreciated. Stan |

So I guess SG's "Athens" equates to Scott's "poor". They too list the perfed 25l only for Athens print. However, they give two colour varieties: "purple" (SG 106) and "pale purple" (106a) (same CVs). So I'd guess your friend has one of each, although I wouldn't call the colour the scans appear on my screen either "lilac" or "purple", and I always wonder about "shade" versus "fade" on stamps over 100 years old! I've not checked the links, but I'm sure they will help. Owner of the stamp assures me it really is lilac, not what the cjoint image shows. I've just collected all the relevant enlarged images on the APS Internet Sales Unit for study also. Stan |
