my tastes to reread some of his old books. However most are out of print.

Yesterday went to the local library book sale and to my surprise found
hardbacks with the covers in excellent condition (probably because no one
knows to check him out) of:

Way Station
Cemetary World
A Choice of Gods
Enchanted Pilgrimage
A Heritage of Stars

and one I hadn't read
Mastodonia

Got them all for $3.00!

Were they first editions or book club editions?

Book club editions. But I'm not a collector. I'm a reader grin. I
always tell the story of trying to buy the first comic where Spiderman
appeared. The guy had it plastic wrapped and was selling for 20 bucks. I
told him I looked forward to getting it home and finally reading the story.
The comic store owner's jaw dropped and his eyes got wide and he snatched it
back from me saying, "You're not going to read it. I'm sorry I can't sell
this to you."

Some book club editions do make it to collector status --
especially of titles that were only first printed in mass paperbacks
and are now sought after -- so you might occasionally get lucky and
have the best of both worlds.

It's sad and pathetic vultures like that that give dealers a bad
name.

Did you hear my story of the time a teacher had to give me my
several bucks back because I was the only one in my 5th grade class
who actually ordered books to read for fun through the Scholastic
"group buying" program? She made a point to do the refund outloud
during class...to make a point to the class, I guess.

Although I enjoyed reading a few books in school, like the Freddy the Pig
books in elementary and Jude the Obscure in high school, I really didn't
fall in love with reading until I was in my early 20s in the Marines. I was
reading Conan comic books and a friend tossed me some Robert Howard books
and said, why don't you read the *real* thing. Joined the SFBC of America
and been reading avidly ever since!
