I don't know what you call expensive. I bought 2001 proof set(clad) for
$16.01 + $3.50 S&H on eBay last summer.
Jack NJ

They are $120 now.

Assuming you're talking about the US silver proof sets, blame it on the
general stupidity of consumers. In 1999 no one guessed how in demand
silver proof sets would be, so few bought them, and consequently the
prices went up. So, in 2000, everybody wanted in on the action, and the
sets sold like crazy. More supply of course equals lower prices.
Disenchanted with proof sets, everyone stayed away again in 2001 --
ergo, the high prices return.

Remember that in 1999 the Mint limited how many of each set "each
household" could order. The stupidity that year was not on the part of
consumers. Prices skyrocketed, and as Bob said, people bought lots of
2000s hoping for a repeat. They can still be obtained for near the
issue price.

Yes, that's correct -- the mind fades. I do recall my fairly clever
dealer friend got around this by placing multiple orders, each with
different addresses: 123 Main Street Suite A, 123 Main Street Suite B,
etc. Of course, 123 Main Street was just his house, but it was enough to
fool the Mint.

At the very end of 1999 the mint dropped the restriction of 2 sets per
house hold. I bought 14 1999 silver proof sets that year with no
restrictions.

The 2001 proof SAC is going for about 100.00, so either set you wanted
your going to have to pay, since there is one ikn there. :-)

Greysheet bid is 100 and 135, clad anmd silver.

So if there is someone in this thread telling you that you are gong to get
them a lot cheaper at a dealer, forget it. Want the price to go down?
Don't buy one. It's the present absurd modern market, an will sooner or
later balance. Like a 1986 Liberty commem set.
