Valid for franking - US-stamps?
Dear Friends,
Can any of you tell me which US stamps are still valid for franking and where do I find a list / reference? Thanks very much! -- Mvh Toke http://www.norbyhus.dk/ |

... Dear Friends, Can any of you tell me which US stamps are still valid for franking and where do I find a list / reference? As far as I am informed all US-stamps are still valid for postage. This is why people are generally advised to use their spare US-stamps for add-ups instead of selling them. That way the stamps still hold face value, whilst in a sale they are likely to go for much less. This is the way it should be, unless there has been a demonetization. I don't know of any references for this, so please correct me if I am wrong. As an aside, all French stamps are also valid for postage, no matter which denomination they have (Ancien Francs, Nouveau Francs, Euro). One "just" has to recalculate the old denomination to correspond to Euro. -- Best regards Ann Mette Heindorff (Mette) remove usenet to reply http://www.heindorffhus.dk |

Thanks Mette, As usual you are right :-) Strange enough I did not found this page: http://pe.usps.gov/text/dmm/P022.htm when I was "Googling" for the answer this morning. Dear Friends, Can any of you tell me which US stamps are still valid for franking and where do I find a list / reference? Thanks very much! -- Mvh Toke Toke, Mette--conventional wisdom here is that the only U.S. stamps ever demonetized are those issued before the Civil War (1861-1865). Those earlier issues were demonetized to reduce the ability of the Confederate States to use them for postage. As far as I know, everything since then is still good for postage, even if some postal clerks are more than surprised to find that out. Stan Fairchild |

Actually, US stamps issued prior to the beginning of the US Civil War, 1861, were declared invalid to keep the South from profiting from the stamps that were in Southern post offices. All postage stamps issued since then are valid, unless they were issued for specific services that are no longer offered by the Postal Service. Also some postal cards are no longer mailable because they are now considered to be too small to mail. = Eric -- = Eric K. All stamps issued since the beginning of the Civil War (1861?) are
still valid for postage in the United States. Any good US catalog will give you a decent list of what's been issued in the last 143 years. Toke Nørby wrote in message . .. Evidenced tragically, when the FBI were investigating the
deaths of Lawyers and Judges involved in civil rights cases, in the early 1990's from letter bombs. The packages were mailed using 3c issues from 1932 thru 1958. | All stamps issued since the beginning of the Civil War (1861?) are still valid for postage in the United States. |

The Petain stamps were demonetized a quite long time ago, more exactly on the 1st of November 1944.
