Default Yen

I guess this is more an economic question but you guys seem to know a
lot. The Japanese Yen is one the major currencies in the world right?
It's up there with the dollar and the Euro I think. My question, why
do they still use such large denominations? It reminds me of the old
Italian lira, you needs thousands before you start talking about real
money.

Thanks in advance
