"Ex-Lib"category : Are their differences?
I recently purchased a first edition of Bradbury's _The Martian Chronicles_.
It's an "ex-lib" copy, since the front free endpaper is stamped: "Editorial library copy do not remove from office must be returned to library." But, since it's a first edition, first binding state with vg dj, I was happy to buy it at about 60% of what such a copy might have brought if it didn't have the stamp. I'm wondering if collectors make distinctions between publisher or newspaper "file" copies, which this copy may be, and regular library copies? The former may have experienced less handling than the latter. My copy does not have any checkout card pockets, and on the whole is in pretty good shape. Thanks in advance for any feedback, Mike |

I would be interested to have a publisher's file copy of a title by an
author I collected. I would *not* be interested in an ex-library copy, which is usually abused or defaced in several ways. |

In an old post, I made these points: The relevant distinctions that I can find in the authorities and in my experience are these: (1) Circulating vs. noncirculating libraries/collections: the former less desirable, the latter less objectionable. (2) External vs. internal only library markings: ditto. (3) Ex-library fiction vs. ex-library (scholarly) nonfiction: ditto. William M. Klimon http://www.catholicbookcollector.com |
