Default The Franklin Mint...bad news (FYI)

Yesterday at NOON the Franklin Mint closed its doors for good. They blame
everything under the sun but the management killed the company. Other
collectible companies are proserping having copied the FM system.

That is truely sad news. I have many, many FM products in my
collection.......... medals as well as world coins, and all exhibit true art
and superior craftsmanship. I know that you have been a big supporter of
the FM on this ng over the years and must be sorely disappointed with the
turn of events.

If you have any of their calendar medals then I would love to see some examples
on abpn or any site if you ever were so inclined. Heck! I would enjoy seeing
almost any of their medals :-)

I'll check, Dale, and see what I have that might be of interest. Will try
to post periodic pics to abpn. Stay tuned.

They must have been in really bad shape. Usually a company in trouble will wait
and see how they do during the holiday season before they make a decision on
closing (many will fold in Jan. or Feb. after looking at the sales figures).
That Franklin Mint couldn't even wait 2 months more really tells you something.

Sad news...
I just started collecting their 20 Balboa coins ("damn" you, the one who
mentioned them a few weeks ago:-) I felt in love with these huge coins!) and
I must say that IMHO their quality is no worse than that of any other
national Mint...

The Franklin mint was an actual mint for many years and produced some really
good coins. Unfortunately, they stopped minting coins when they found out that
they could sell other collectables.

For a brief time in 1982, the US Congress even considered giving them a
contract to do US Olympic commemerative coins. But that nearly killed the US
commemerative program.

Others can do what's being done by the FM cheaper and better.
