351M and 400M are 351 Cleveland engines. The "M" stands for "Modified".
The 351C block was modified to accept a 460 CID bellhousing (bolt pattern change). This allowed the 351 block to be installed in heavy duty trucks, LTD's, Lincolns and Thunderbirds where 460's were used. It's common knowledge amongst mechanics, automotive engineers, and
racers, the M variant of the 335 series is merely a raised deck Cleveland. The entire family has the series number "335"- 351C/351M/400. There is only minor design variations between the C and M, within that family. 98% of the parts interchange,. between the early C, and later M variants. The M actually has a few design advantages. With a higher deck, a longer connecting rod can be used, improving the rod/stroke ratio. And a longer stroke crankshaft can also be fitted, making the engine bigger in displacement. Hence the 400 CID variant. It's merely an enlarged Cleveland, still using Cleveland 2V heads. The hot trick is, put Cleveland 4V heads on the 400M- then you have a real killer. That is something the factory never did, because by the mid-1970's, the gas crunch put a dampener on the musclecar market. Factory ratings don't mean much with these engines- they were rated dubiously low by the factory, so buyers could get cheaper insurance rates. They were also fitted with emissions camshafts to pass emissions laws, and rated with all accessories on, and at the flywheel, to make the rating look low. Changing the cam, intake, and carburetor will easily add 100 to 150 HP. These engines easily make nearly 400 HP with little work. Here's an Edelbrock dyno test, using a dual plane intake. http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/2171graph.html The canted valve 335 series head is very efficient. No matter what engine it's on. |

The Edelbrock nomenclature plainly states, 400's with 2V Cleveland heads, that's how they came from the factory in the early 1970's. |
