FA: WWI British - New Zealand Id'd Wosley Pattern Sun Helmet, Exc.
WWI British - New Zealand Id'd Wosley Pattern Sun Helmet, Exc.
This WWI New Zealand Wosley Pattern Sun Helmet is in excellent condition and identified to Corpl. L. Morgan. Corporal Morgan was part of the 3rd Howitzer Battery. The helmet is a khaki cotton covered cork pith helmet that has a top vent and puggaree with the 3rd Battalion Wellington Regiment wool (flash) badge of Blue-Red-Blue. The interior has a green cotton facing lining that is lightly stained from sweat with minor worn areas. The helmet still retains the brown leather sweatband chinstrap. The interior of the helmet is marked and has the British-Zealand crown with (W. D) and the broad arrow, and dated 1912. The interior also has the soldiers name (Corpl L (I ??) Morgan) partial service number (1043), and his brigade. This helmet is in excellent condition and with the exception of the minor wear on the inside as described above, has no other damage. The helmet is still (stiff) with no signs of (caving in). There are no cuts, holes, tears, broken or missing pieces. Please see the pictures to see the details. These Wosley helmets were worn during the Gallipoli Campaign and then turned in when the units were transferred to Flanders. These ANZAC helmets are very scarce today (not to mention one Id'd) and reflect the impossible situations these soldiers endured like the landings at Gallipoli that earned them legendary status among combat WWI soldiers. This helmet was purchased from a top notch military collector who retired from collecting. It is all genuine and guaranteed, and the first time I have ever come across one. I will provide successful bidder with additional information about where/how the collector obtained this. This helmet is well worthy of further research.
