Default 1960 Ireland Europa issue

Can anybody please tell me why this pair of stamps is so expensive?
All of the other Irish Europas seem to be reasonably priced.
Is there some sort of book that tells you what the mintage figures
are for Irish stamps?

The quantites issued were 1,601,040 for the 6d and 1,170,240 for the
1/3. These quantities are in line with other nearby issues.

The Europa market is very speculative. Gitner, Marlen and others are
offering high prices. Most of what they buy goes to Europe, usually
to Afinsa. The buy prices have been going down for the last few
months. If you're looking to buy, it might pay you to wait.

There was an article about the Europa market in Linns not too long
ago. Does anybody remember which issue?

G'day Gordon,
Just a FYI
Checking the Stanley Gibbons
The 6d light brown is reasonable at 3.00
The expensive issue 1s3d is 16.00 and carries a note
that the ink of the 1s3d is fugitive.

This help Jay?

03-29-2004 SPANISH FIRMS DRIVING EUROPA SPECULATION
Charles Snee, writing in Linn's Stamp News, tackles the subject of speculation in EUROPA issues. Snee attributes the
market in these issues primarily to two Spanish firms, Afinsa and Forum. Supposedly, the stamps are being marketed as an
investment vehicle for non-collectors. Snee describes the current market in EUROPA stamps as cooling off, with the
possibility of some dramatic price drops in some issues. Two major U.S. buyers of EUROPA material, Marlen Stamps and
Coins and Henry Gitner Philatelists, Inc., both portray the EUROPA market as highly speculative. The first EUROPA stamps
were issued in 1956 by Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. Today more than 50 countries
now issue EUROPA stamps.

This issue was the FIRST Europa issue for Eire. It was largely
ignored by many back in 1960. As people started collecting Europa
later on, they went back to fill in empty spaces and the stamps had
become scarce ESPECIALLY Mint Not Hinged.

The mint Eire 1960 set catalogues $75.00

The same happened with early Europas from other countries.
Liechtenstein's 1960 Europa stamp catalogues $50.00

Recently on eBay, a MNH Eire set was listed starting at $40.00 US.
After 5 Bids, it sold to Marlen Stamp Co. for $52.25 US.
Who knows what they will resell at?

A large US dealer BUYS the same 1960 Irish set at $70.00 US.
