Default "Who is John Galt" (and what's he *really* worth)

I'm curious if there is a way to find out what books published - since
say the 1940's on - are worth the most money.

I believe Mr. Gates paid quite a large sum for one of DaVinci's
surviving works, and although that in itself is an interesting topic,
I'm thinking more along the lines of books published since the 40's or
50's - off the top of my head "In Cold Blood" or "Atlas Shrugged" -
books of this sort.

Opinions?

URLS's for lists?

Thank you, kindly.

You may have to decide beforehand whether you
want to count copies sold or dollars: if the lattter
you can include movie rights which may in some
cases have been more lucrative than book sales.

I had assumed the OP meant which books commanded the highest price for a
first edition copy, in which case the following may be of help:

-Katharine Kyes Leab (Editor), American Book Prices Current 2004: The
Auction Season September 2003 - August 2004

-Marie Tedford and Pat Goudey, Official Price Guide to Books

-Richard Russell, Antique Trader Book Collector's Price Guide

-Mildred S. Mandeville, Used Book Price Guide (updated for several years
after her death by Richard L. Collins)

For specific areas of book-collecting, there a

-Jeff Canja, Collectable Paperback Books

-Michael Cole, International Rare Book Prices: Early Printed Books (a
bit dated now)

-Robert M. Overstreet, The Official Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide

And there's always Ian C. Ellis, Book Finds, which has an appendix of
"1001 most collectible books".

There are several others, but those probably cover most bases.

There is/was a book published annually called "Book Prices: Used and Rare XXXX"
(the XXXX being the year for which it is published). I believe that it is now
available (also?) on CD.

I think To Kill a Mockingbird may be near the top of the list.

I checked around for this title, and found editions from the late 90's
and earlier. I was thinking that there would be later editions as
well (2005 for example).

Is this the case and did I just miss 'em?

Thank you (and others) for posting your lists. This should get me
started and then some.

Warm regards,
