Curiosity Corner #322. A stand of stamps 571 miles high.
When the USA upped their internal postage rates to 22c, (1989), the
head of the US Postal Service provided the following amazing statistics. Mr Don McDowell stated that 13.3 BILLION stamps were required to replenish PO stock. To put this into perspective, Mr McDowell said the 13.3 billion stamps, stacked atop each other would stand 571 miles high, or the equivalent of 100 Mount Everests! If laid end to end, they would be 55,788 miles long. Just to print these new 22c issues, the Bureau of Engraving needed nearly one million pounds of ink, and 4680 tons of paper!
