I have a pen I have not written with for a while; what is the best way
to start the ink to flow?

Soak the nib overnight by standing the pen in a glass with just enough
water to cover the nib. In the morning, flush the nib, section, and
reservoir/converter thoroughly with water. Refill the pen with ink or
install a new cartridge and it should write immediately.
