Default DC Pen Show Seminar - Deb Kinney Practical Elegance - A Short Course

Saturday Seminar

Announcing Fountain Pens:
Practical Elegance….A Short Course(4 hrs) at the DC Show

Location: DC Fountain Pen Supershow, August 9-10, 2003
Time: To be determined, probably Saturday August 9
Instructor: Deb Kinney
Cost: $50 (Includes materials)
Course Summary:
Fountain Pens: Practical Elegance
(Deb Kinney) Class ID# 6931

The history of the fountain pen and the history of modern writing go
hand-in-glove. We'll stroll the late 1800s to the present day in our
Armchair tour of this most practical, most elegant of writing
instruments. Learn about the four big manufacturers who revolutionized
the writing industry; consider the relative virtues of the various
ink-filling systems; and get a grip on modern pen options. You'll come
away knowing how to choose a fountain pen, how to use the different
nibs, how to maintain pens, and how to choose the right ink and paper.
Your instructor encourages you to bring in your vintage, or simply
old,
fountain pens for restoration advice. Deb Kinney has been accumulating
fountain pens since she was a small child and has been a serious
collector for 20 years. Her extensive collection includes a
concentration in vintage Sheaffer and Parker and modern Italian pens.
Using skills she learned as a jewelry maker, Deb began repairing and
restoring vintage pens eight years ago, and recently began grinding
custom nibs. Co-founder in 1999 of the Triangle Pen Club, Deb has
worked at major pen shows and served three years as the pen expert for
the local Sharon Luggage store in the Raleigh-Durham area.
