QUESTION # 1 - Hawaii $1 Silver Certficate
I have a $1 bill (silver certificate) stamped HAWAII on front and back.
The Serial Number and Seal are bronze color. "HAWAII" is stamped across the entire back and in smaller letter size, vertically on the front, on both sides between the numerals 1 and in the white portion of the bill (not in the design). I was told the US Government issued currency stamped in this fashion immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor, just in case the island fell into enemy hands, at which time the US Government would declare "stamped" currency will not be legal tender in the US. I cannot find out information or value off such a bill anywhere. Can some please advise me or direct me in the proper direction? Thank you in advance. |

Mostly correct. It didn't happen immediately -- the plan was the "Hawaii" stamped notes would be the only legal tender in the islands after everyone exchanged old non-Hawaii notes for the new stamped ones, and this was supposed to happen by July 1942. The changeover wasn't completely completed due to some citizen resistance for 27 months. I cannot find out information or value off such a bill anywhere. Can some please advise me or direct me in the proper direction? Thank you in advance. Well circulated examples usually go for around $10-20. |
