Default japanese stamp color

Dear friends,
A friend of mine has sent me this scan of a stamp of his. It is a Japanese
stamp that Scott does not catalog it with this color (grey):

http://www.cjoint.com/confirm.php?cjoint=0HdbvrcBKfw

I'd appreciate very much any information regarding this stamp. Is it an ink
error? It appears to be Scott# 521. But it is not listed as grey color.

Thanks in advance,
Pedro

558 is dark brown. 885 is dark carmine rose and is illustration A565f which
has "NIPPON" inscription in upper left corner, not the case. 916 is bright
carmine and also is A565f with "NIPPON" inscription. None of them is grey,
and this stamp has not the "NIPPPON" letters.

Thanks anyway,
Pedro

Maybe a homemade fake?

I just was thinking in that as nobody seems to have heard of that version of
the stamp. How can one check the authenticity of a stamp...?

Thanks for your answer,
Pedro
