Maltese Cross cancels ?
Is there a book/catalogue that would tell me which towns in Somerset
employed a Maltese Cross cancel ? Would I be right in thinking it would be the earlier post towns: eg. Axbridge, Bath, Bridg(e)water, Bruton, Castle Cary, Chard, Clevedon ?, Crewkerne, Cross ?, Dulverton, Frome, Glastonbury, Ilchester, Ilminster, Langport, Minehead, Shepton Mallet, Somerton, South Petherton, Taunton, Wellington, Wells. I would presume all post offices that were in action in 1840-1842 would have used maltese cross cancellers for the stamps, and a town stamp elsewhere on the cover-- -- Tony Clayton |

Maltese Cross cancels ?

: Nick Bridgwater No@Spam found these unused words: Is there a book/catalogue that would tell me which towns in Somerset employed a Maltese Cross cancel ? There are several books on the 'Maltese Cross', but they mostly deal with the distinctive crosses. The most recent " The Maltese Cross Cancellations of Great Britain and Ireland" is a planned 3 volume work [two are out], but very expensive. The earlier Alcock & Holland work was far less in scope, but did have plastic overlays for some of the distinctive crosses. IF, as with most, there's no major 'distinction', then it's almost impossible to tell the town from the cross. Would I be right in thinking it would be the earlier post towns: eg. Axbridge, Bath, Bridg(e)water, Bruton, Castle Cary, Chard, Clevedon ?, Crewkerne, Cross ?, Dulverton, Frome, Glastonbury, Ilchester, Ilminster, Langport, Minehead, Shepton Mallet, Somerton, South Petherton, Taunton, Wellington, Wells. All active post towns would have used an MX from May 1840 through the issuance of the Barred Numerals in 1844. A few continued to use their MX even later. Axbridge was not on the 1844-57 list, so probably no MX Bruton was not on the 1844-57 list, so probably no MX Castle Cary was not on the 1844-57 list, so probably no MX Clevedon was not on the 1844-57 list, so probably no MX Cross was not listed through the entire BN period Dulverton was not in the first issued BN's so probably no MX Langport was not in the first issued BN's so probably no MX Minehead, Dunster, Taunton, Williton were issued at the same time, late in the BN series. MX possible on Taunton and Williton as they appear at the proper place in the alphabet of the first BN issue, I'd think questionable on Minehead and Dunston. Regards, Nick HTH JA Thanks. I've got a couple of examples of MX on covers that appear to originate from Minehead (dated June 1841 & December 1842). I've also looked at Pigot's Somerset Directory for 1844 and it lists "Post Offices" for most of the major towns in Somerset, onlyu 3 of which does it add the rider that their post goes to another (post) town. I guess it's a question of looking for them on a decent cover/entire. Regards, Nick |
