My girlfriend just phoned and found reprints at Costco (For those who
have not enjoyed the experience, it is a North American store that
offers deep discounts on the toys and gustatory delights of affluent
Americans.) Usually it's book selection is reserved for Bestsellers.
Has Stella Gibbons been resurrected? Why else would a mass marketer qua
mass marketer, be hawking her books. The motion picture has already been
done. It starred a pre-inflated Kate Bekinsale and Rufus Sewell.
Excellent film.

Any idea what's up?

This thread is clearly off-topic for this group since it in no way
references Barker or Pelan.
Please stay on-topic in the future!

This is a prolix serial. Chvzzlewits abouvd. There is Martin Sr.,
Martin Jr. and a host of ancillary Chvzzlewits. Story is goofy. I do
not want to repeat the experience. Are yov speaking literally,
metaphorically or are yov svggesting something vnspeakable. If the
latter, either George Bvsh or Tony Blair will bring yov to grouvnd.
When last I heard, the latter has an anxiovs jvnior officer keen to
attack someone. If you valve your lawn (metallic treads compact the
soil something dreadful.) explain yovrself!. Sir!

As enchanting as this exercise may be, does anyone know why Stella has
a new literary life?

Has Stella Gibbons been resurrected?

does anyone know why Stella has a new literary life?

There was a Penguin reprint in the last couple of years. But why
that was done I don't know.

It's a good book. Was there a contemporaneous American novel that
took the **** out of bible-bashers in the boonies so effectively?

Hard to say. I wish I were a literature major because no doubt I could
wow you with expository language. - But sad to say, I found the English
Department at Whittier College a sad dreary lot.

Back on point (FAQs you know), I think I would have to go with William
Saroyan. He had the grittiness (bad word - best exposition) and still a
sense of humour. A little sentimental, but his characters were spot on
and funny.

Steinbeck may be a possibility - Cannery Row- perhaps.. I'd have to
read The Grapes of Wrath again because I never thought there was much
humour. Unfourtunately, the motion picture images are difficult to
erase.

Back to the original post -Why would CCF be released again and carried
by a bacon through goose enterprise?

I was wondering if you might be more successful wooing her with a bigger
Dickens.

The writer I publish (Reggie Oliver) is the nephew of the late Stella
Gibbons and the author of OUT OF THE WOODSHED, the acclaimed biography
on Miss Gibbons. He also gives talks to academic institutions on both
the novel and the life of his aunt. His father also edited and
turned-around the fortunes of TATLER magazine, so there is a notable
literary pedigree in the family.

In the UK, COLD COMFORT FARM has recently been added to the list of
approved texts for teaching English Literature. This has led to a
resurgence in the book's popularity.
