Stamp ID Please Scotland.
This stamp is supposed to be SMH56a. I do not have a SMH56 to compare
it to. Scott describes the differnce between type I and II and show only two very small drawings of the difference. I don't see a line from the eye to the background only a notch above. So I supposed that it is SMH56? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...GB-SMH56ax.jpg |

I am not an expert, and agree that the notch rather than line at the eye is a bit confusing, but trying to look at the neck beneath the killer cancel, yours could be Type II. Chris |

On type 1 these are different lengths. On type 2 they are all the same length. Douglas (Deegam) To contact me use: deegam#btopenworld.com but change the # to @ |

The Scott Catalog does not distinguish between Questa and Waddington.
types. Is there another catalog showing the different prices Thanks. Douglas Myall wrote: "Treacan" wrote in message ups.com... This stamp is supposed to be SMH56a. (Only the Waddington stamp was printed with both symbols) Douglas (Deegam) SG Concise (2004 edition) has:- S51 Waddington (Type I) (23-Oct-84) £2.25 mint or used S51Ea Waddington (Type II) (Nov-85) £100/£70 M/U S76 Questa (Type II, phosphorised paper) (29-Apr-86) £2/£1.90 If you really want to blow your mind, get SG Specialised Vol 4 which goes into even more varieties, but you'll be relieved to hear not for the 31p values. (See above re a valid e-mail address; the Pipex one will not work.) There are three Scotland 31p stamps: 1. Type 1 issued 23 October 1984, perf. 14 (Waddington) 2. Type 2 issued 23 October 1984, perf. 14 (Waddington) 3. Type 2 issued 29 April 1986, perf. 15 x 14 (Questa) No. 2 is the scarce one and usually retails at about GBP50+ used (GBP100 mint). The others are about GBP1 at most. Is it really true that Scott lists only two of these stamps? Douglas |

Yes Scott lists only 2. My stamps is perf 14 so it's not a Questa which
you have as 14 x 15. So I must assume now that it is a type II Waddington. Douglas Myall wrote: "Treacan" wrote in message ups.com...
