Need Help With Australia Stamps
Hi,
Does anyone know of a site that depicts the different die types for Australia "Kangaroo and Map" and "King George V" stamps? The Scott die descriptions are a little confusing as to what is being described. A picture and description of the dies would be great. I now have a lot of respect for all British collectors. I am cataloging a pile of Australia (including states) and British stamps. I really give you guys credit. What a pile of watermarks, perfs, die types, etc. I don't know how you do it. Thanks in advance for any info and links. I really appreciate it. Jerry B |

G'day Jerry,
a reasonable entry level catalogue would be any Stanley Gibbons British Commonwealth Stamp Catalogue (part 1) which will give you a suitable level to organise your issues. early copies 1980's onwards are cheap as chips, almost give always here in oz. Any further advancement will depend on your desire, approach and sanity The KGV sideface can be a life's work if you so desire. (It's nice to know some avenues are endless Brusden white is the bible imho and recently newly released the "Kangaroos" copy is 520 pages and AUD$125 and as one philatelist has quoted in reference to these Brusden Whites 'Australia has THE best and most detailed stamp catalogues of any country on earth" HTH | Hi, | | Does anyone know of a site that depicts the different die types for | Australia "Kangaroo and Map" and "King George V" stamps? BTW "Bizarre corner" any Queenslander or Victorian or South Australian would be licking stamps with Queen Victoria's visage for 12 years after her death. there was no other option. | Hi, | | Does anyone know of a site that depicts the different die types for | Australia "Kangaroo and Map" and "King George V" stamps? Depends where you are, but remember the local library!!
you only need to Xerox 4-5 pages. If you meet with extreme problems, let us know of list, I probably could rip the pages out of an old catalogue here. No one wants them, they fetch about $1 at auction, and we will simply be adding to the natural attrition rate. I have due respect for books, but I am getting snowed under here they are growing!! they will eventually end up in the recycle bin no doubt. | Hi All, | | Thanks for the responses. I just remembered, I think I have 30-40 "australian commonwealth specialists' catalogues" in the loft. They are old, and follow their own Cataloguing lexicon (which is a pain in the butt) but for chapter and verse........................... Email me off list, and I'll snail mail a copy to you, if you want. Cheers. | Depends where you are, but remember the local library!! | you only need to Xerox 4-5 pages. | | If you meet with extreme problems, let us know of list, | I probably could rip the pages out of an old catalogue here. | No one wants them, they fetch about $1 at auction, and | we will simply be adding to the natural attrition rate. | | I have due respect for books, but I am getting snowed under here | they are growing!! they will eventually end up in the recycle bin no doubt. | | | | | | | Hi All, | | | | Thanks for the responses. Hi All
Even more specialised than Brusden White are the BSAP checklists of the 1/2d, 1d, and 4d sidefaces and their various publications on the Kangaroo and Map. Greg Pope has recently published superb volumes on values in the Kangaroo and Map series. The 1d, 2d and 2 1/2d are all available. He has just completed the 3d Kangaroo (not yet published) and has started work on the 6d Kangaroo. Banwell and Parsons have just published the 9d Kangaroo checklist. I have published a short article on the 3d Die 1 and Die 2 stamps and how to differentiate between them. Drury and Finlayson's studies of the 1d sideface are even more detailed and still ongoing. I am always happy to answer any questions on the sidefaces to 1924 and the Kangaroo and Map to 1925 (when my specialisation stops!). There is a superb site which gives a complete history of Australian Stamps to about 1954 which can be found at http://predecimal.nf/ and although it hasn't been updated for some time it is still a tremendous historical site. |

I cannot find much on this site - about a page and a half of fairly general information of roos and heads and an enlarged picture of a blank roo stamp. And I cannot switch off the "music" which annoyingly interferes with the radio that I am playing through the computer speakers. Regards, Roger |

And as it was not the special on KGV but the 'general' specialised on Australia, I guess the special KGV or Roo would more precise and beautiful ) After that, there are papers only known by australian or very specialised collectors (as mentionned by a contributor in this topic) but I'm far to this ;o) Anyway, good luck et 'bon courage' as we said here ! -- ThibauT sans être syndicaliste, je soutiens l'effort collectif ) FAQ de frp : url:http://www.faqphilatelie.lautre.net/ |
