The Guess Who
I have not scanned eBay 8track stuff for awhile but it used to be that
one of the better sellers were Guess Who carts. Oddly enough they are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Maybe not so odd given some of the exclusions and inclusions that haunt the hall. Rumours of an east coast bias (Manitoba, whatinell is a Manitoba?) with the hall physically in Ohio but the machinery in New York may well be true. Some say The Guess Who were strictly regional. Zuh? I lived all over the USA in the late 60s and 70s and they were probably more popular there (especially the midwest and north Pacific) than in Winnipeg. The Guess Who (aka "Salisbury House"...no, wait, that came later) was one of the top AM radio chart bands of that era in California, and sold quite respectable album numbers as well. There was a flurry of Canadian infusion into US pop back then, as well as CW with Annie Murray and the others. The unsung heroes of that movement, in Top 40 pop anyway, were The Box Tops...they never got no respect for anything! Odd, however, is that every time I think of Burton, I think of Salisbury steaks with plenty of beef gravy now. It's a weird contrivance of mine...sort of similar to the one of Charlie Nudo rummaging around in a greasy dumpster with Alfredo sauce smeared all over his shirt. Can't seem to shake that one, either. I think Rick minted that one. I had the whole gamut of TGW releases on carts, all Canadian manufacture. They were of better quality than contemporary US product, at least in terms of frequency response. It appeared that the Canucks in the tape dupe plants up there were a little more diligent about head cleaning, replacement and alignment than the slugs down south. One of the "highest fi" carts I ever had was a copy of Zappa's "Orchestral Favorites", in Dolby B, in the ubiquitous banana yellow carts that defied opening without tab breakage. I garnered a ton of Canadian Dolby releases on cart once I moved up to the Wollensak 8075, and it did improve one of 8 track's bad features, low signal-to-noise ratio. Why it never caught on in the US is cause for speculation. It sure DID catch on with cassettes a few years later! |

Sign the petition:http://www.petitiononline.com/tfh1/ they only had a few good top 40 songs, their albums on a whole were disappointing eventually all classic rock bands will be in the hall of fame, because there simply isn't that many of them, the hall status is bogus simply a way to bilk more money and get the public to buy the same old LP's they already heard 5000 times on vinyl and tape back in the day example: a few years back, they aired a Pink Floyd The Wall tour concert on cable TV- today's rap/hip hop/bubble gum generation watched it at home- that weekend, Pink Floyd CD sales skyrocketed, and disappeared from the shelves like so many hot cakes |

The order of the songs was just right and to me it is one long song that could be played over and over. I have it on CD now and it plays about once a month in my CD Jukebox. |

for anything! Greatly under appreciated band. Alex Chilton went on with Big Star which was even more under appreciated. Lots of people who were listening to music at that time are unaware of them. The last couple of teenage generations are more hip to them. In fact last time Chilton was here most of the crowd was quite young as it was not advertised as a Box Tops show which would have at least roused a few nostalgic dinosaur ticket buyers. Not sure if any Big Star stuff made it to 8 track but I see no reason why not. I am guessing they would be fairly rare if they did though. |

How about your FAVORITE band from that era, Noodles? Remember...LED ZEPPELIN? Want me to start reposting all you accolades about Jimmy Page and Robert Plant now? We can make it sort of a "Nudo Goes Nuts Again" retrospective! |

Moron...compairng TGW to Floyd is like comparing a fish to a bicycle. Floyd was a stoner band (right up your alley, eh, Noodles?) and TGW was a Top 40 outfit, for the most part, although they did a lot of other stuff quite well, as well. Not to mention the part Trip clipped and replied to was discussing The Box Tops, Alex Chilton, and Big Star. Here's an idea, don't just read the subject line and start hammering out some reply. But for sure TGW was no Pink Floyd and why should they be? And why does it always have to be my stuff vs. other's stuff? The Guess Who had a lot of jazz background, Burton loved the lounge singers (Darin, Sinatra, etc), and there was always a strong interest in country music on the prairies. The then Brit influenced Winnipeg soaked up whatever was going on in England like skiffle and the British Invasion and blues stuff. Then what with the six months of winter you had quite a bit of quirkiness. All these factors came together to give the band it's distinctive sound. No doubt the same way that Pink Floyd arrived at their sound. "A bag of goodies and a bottle of wine we're gonna get it on right tonight" - The Guess Who "New Mother Nature" |

I've gotta figure out why using Windows Mail my new topic posts come up with
red lettering and a set of spectacles at the side. Sporty looking I suppose, but I would still like to know why. |

Want me to start reposting all you accolades about Jimmy Page and
Robert Plant now? We can make it sort of a "Nudo Goes Nuts Again" retrospective! Was that when Trip felt the Zep was satanic? I think that comes up every now and then here and there and at different times. Possible, I suppose. Trip, do you still follow that sentiment? Plant has an interesting project out currently with Alison Krauss of bluegrass and Americana fame. I note no satanic messages though I did not play anything backwards. They cover two Gene Clark (Byrds, Dillard and Clark) tunes on their recent CD. |
